Utah!

bragabit,

I think I'd wait at least a week and a half for your older 4. Then a week after that for the next 4. And then I'd wait at least 4 1/2 more weeks for your 4 babies...

Are you keeping all 3 ages in the same brooder?

We had to get a bigger box, than another bigger box, and then a 3rd. We just kept adding on, finding things to put over the top so they wouldn't fly out, and finally got them outside when it was time.

They are all in the same brooder. The youngest are 2 1/2 weeks old right now. They all get along great, I would hate to seperate them and have to re-introduce them again. Hmm maybe I will have to wait.

I have some barred rock pullets, a little more than a month old (maybe you want older than that), and some barred crosses, and I'll be in Utah County on Thursday if you're interested. I've had them out in the coop for a few weeks under a heat lamp, and they're doing great. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone else personally who has pullets for sale, especially older ones.

I'm not quite ready to pick up new birds yet, and Thursday I have to attend a funeral. Where are you located?

I'm in Fillmore, but I'm in Utah County every week. I'll be up tomorrow and then again Tuesday. PM me if you're interested, or want more information. I can email pics.

It depends on night temps and if they are adjusted to cooler nights, too. My older chicks are 4-6 weeks old and have been in the coop under a heat lamp for several weeks. I took it off a couple of nights ago and they seem to be doing fine even though it's been in the low 40s at night. Of course they huddle up, but they've had some time to acclimatise to the cooler weather first.

Otherwise, I'd say bragabit is probably right at this time of year. At seven weeks they're all fluffed up and ready to go.

Hi all,

Just moved to Draper and got my first little flock. I did have 15 layers, but a bad dog just got 5 of my girls this morning. I've also got 15 Cornish X that are just about ready to go into the freezer.

Does anyone know if there is any processing equipment available for rent? Pluckers, killing cones, scalder, that kind of thing?

Thanks for all the help!
Becca

Hi Becca,
Sorry about your 5 girls...

Christie Brown has a chicken farm on 10600 South and 1225 East. She and I were going to process some of her chickens this weekend, (Friday/Saturday) but her birds aren't big enough yet.

I was going to bring the scalding pot and burner, (Turkey fryer) and she had the rest of the stuff. It was going to be my first experience processing chickens, and just a learning experience for me. I have no idea, but she may be willing to rent her stuff to you. (Tell her Marty sent ya...)

You can find her information here

Maybe we could work something out if you need help... or a non-experienced hand...?

Hey Marty,

My neighbor offered to replace my hens, and I'm getting some from Christie. I'll have to check with her and see about the equipment. We're thinking about doing the job in about 2 weeks or so. They are 5 weeks now and HUGE!! I don't think I'm going to raise Cornish X again--they're just too weird. But I'm hoping they're tasty!

Oh, I was working on the tractor to dog-proof it, and who should wander into the yard but one of my little prodigal chickens! A silver wyandotte made it and was no worse for the wear. I was so happy to see her!

Hey Kimbobim~

I think you are looking for a bit older birds, but I got chicks last May at Happy Trails Tack and Gift in Lehi. They are at 489 W State and their number is (801) 768-0112. Every time I went to IFA they were sold out and Happy Trails had plenty. I don't know if many people know they have chicks there. All my chicks did great, and now we are getting 6-8 eggs every day from 8 hens

Hey all,
I know we've been poking around a little bit about a Utah ChickenStock, but it hasn't really gone anywhere. I posted a question about what to do at a ChickenStock about a month ago in the "Chickenstocks, Shows & Swaps" section. Weeks and weeks went by without a ...peep...

But, guess who stopped by tonight and said they have a (two?) family reunion(s) in Utah, and would be interested in a ChickenStock? Nifty Chicken !

Nifty is one of the administrators of BYC, and subscribed to my "what should we do at a Chicken Stock?" question and said she (he?) would like to attend one.

I think, my fellow Utah chicken friends, we have our first guest speaker! We now just have to find out when Nifty will be in town...
