Utah!

That is a lot of work! Especially in the freezing cold! Your boys are lucky ones indeed.
Glad is ok in your neighborhood, that is so crazy!

Well I found out what the hubbub was about last night. I guess the cops were conducting a raid on a house one street down, and they used a sonic boom before going in to confuse the people. We think it may have been related to illegal substances, which is sad. I grew up here and I love this neighborhood. It's changed so much, though.

How do you guys even know when a hen isn't laying? I don't have any singularly unique color, so I have no clue if someone stops laying. My two tiny frizzles lay identical eggs. To be honest, they don't lay all that often. My polish and my hamburg lay white, and both are elderly AND exotic, so I don't get many of those. I think someone could not have laid in a year and I'd have no idea.

My hens that lay squat when I come close. These two aren't squatting yet. Plus the exchequer lays white eggs and I don't have any white eggs. When they aren't laying in the late fall/winter none of them squat, then one started so I knew she was laying, then another and so on. These two are the holdouts and it's making me frustrated...

Leftovers: I give my chickens everything but poultry. They can HAVE it, but I feel funny about it, so I don't. I actually quit composting when I got chickens because I had nothing left to compost.

Lisa, I still admire you for trying to make your neighbors happy by putting the rooster in the garage.

Welcome, YouCluckingAtMe!!

Buffbard, Welcome! I'm close to you, in Clinton, but the only sussex I have is a speckled. And I can't tell her eggs from my other brown layers. So, I'm no help.

Kimmypie, I don't think your squatting method would work with me. If they're too young to lay, sure. But I have some that I know lay, have watched lay, but they never squat for me. My elderly hens still squat, even if they don't lay. :-/

Red, glad you figured out what was going on, even if it wasn't a good thing. I think your new place will be wonderful.

I shipped some eggs to GA a few weeks ago, and they're hatching today. 9/12 went into lockdown (two of the blue eggs have hatched already). I'm amazed at that good of a hatch rate with SHIPPED eggs. I can't wait for her to post pictures.

my chickens eat anything. i swear if i were to pass out in the run they would not find anything left of me lol. just go over the list of toxic foods for chickens. oh and my chickens love chicken. and they get the turkey carcass that they pick clean, actually i dont find anything left lol. just gotta be careful they do not kick any part out to the dogs. oh ham bones is another thing they love to pick clean. i too dont compost anymore, they do it for me :)

How much does everyone sell quail hatching eggs. I'm looking at getting some. But my dad won't decide until I can tell him that it will be worth it.

We had an interesting time here in Mesa today. We heard a bunch of helicopters and had police running around. There was a bank robbery and they had the robbers cornered in the large patch of brush and cactus behind us. The RV park is fenced to keep coyotes out so the robbers couldn't come toward us. The cops were trying to find a way into the field but pretty much gave up. They settled on putting a sniper on the trailer along the back fence. We sat on out patio and watched all the hub bub but could not see anything but the helicopters and sniper. They chased some coyotes and Javalena out before they got the 3 robbers.

BTW Red the sonic thing is a called a flash bang Gernade. It makes a huge boom Keep Sammy in the dark as much as possible so he does his job
