"Spike" my frizzle has decided to go broody today! The last egg she laid was fertile, i cracked it open last night to check so i could start collecting her eggs. I geuss i will have to wait to try out my new incubator since i have a natural one out back in the coop now. i dont think i have ever been mad that one of my girls has gone broody, but this is total bull!

my mothers favorite saying is when life gives you lemons make lemonaid. Sounds like you did.

I also like this one, "When life gives you lemons, squirt juice in your enemy's eyes!"

Yeah sorry, I'm a little twisted.

I just separated by welsummers how long after removing the other breeds of roosters do you feel comfortable collecting the eggs and knowing they are fertilized by the welsummer rooster? I have been waiting two weeks just wondering how long everyone else waits.

I wait for three weeks before collecting eggs from my hens, if I'm going for purebreds. I have heard of people waiting for four weeks, but that does seem a little like overkill to me. Three weeks has been pretty good for me thus far

It gives any unneeded "goods" from other roosters time to leave the hen's system.

I can start collecting Icelandic eggs for you soon, if you'd like. Granted, I have to find where the brats are hiding them, first.

Quote: Hey Red..yes please start collecting them for me. I will put them under spike. Her little bantam she hatched didn't make it but a few days. This her second time being broody. Maybe if the chicks are a little bigger and i cut the feathers from around her eyes so she can see she will turn out to be a good mom.

Dude, really? I wrote up a reply and it just deleted it. Blah...........

Madchicken, I can start collecting next week. Do you think a half dozen eggs would be too many for Spike?

Have any of you tried to switch an egg, from under broody hem, for day old chicks? I have a hen that has been sitting on eggs for 22 days and no sign of hatching yet? If they don't hatch by this weekend could I give her chicks to raise, or would she leave or kill them?

I've done it, with mine and a couple of different friends. With her having been on the eggs that long, she will probably accept them. We always watch for a bit first to make sure.

Glad to hear it worked for you. I will probably go that route this weekend if they don't hatch by then.
