I always have the food inside the coop, or under the coop where it can't get wet. Plus, I have that heated water bowl..it's wonderful!
I have a chicken run around my coop, so they don't get out much in the back yard during the winter, only if we have a good part shoveled back. Then, I it's a warmer day, I let them out to roam. They go back in soon enough if it is too cold for them.
I have them out free ranging right now, not sure what they will think when the time comes for me to keep them in the run. Spoiled little stinks.
I buy spinach in the winter. They love it. A great green for them during the winter months while missing out on the grass and weeds. Cabbage is good too.
