Sounds like you will need to make the coop a bit larger if you are keeping 5 chickens. Don't want it too crowed in there, can cause many problems, anywhere from illness to them pecking on each other and others not getting as much to eat. There are some good sites on how much space is needed for the amount of chickens you will be housing.
I always have the food inside the coop, or under the coop where it can't get wet. Plus, I have that heated water bowl..it's wonderful!
I have a chicken run around my coop, so they don't get out much in the back yard during the winter, only if we have a good part shoveled back. Then, I it's a warmer day, I let them out to roam. They go back in soon enough if it is too cold for them. :p I have them out free ranging right now, not sure what they will think when the time comes for me to keep them in the run. Spoiled little stinks.

I buy spinach in the winter. They love it. A great green for them during the winter months while missing out on the grass and weeds. Cabbage is good too.

found this link..hope it works! https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=34001 post number 2....

Ok, I'm at a loss. I have had a couple eggbound hens before but nothing like this... searched the forums and google and can't find anything.

We have a little quail antwerp belgian girl (they are the absolute sweetest chickens) and it appears that when she went to lay the egg it come out but weirdly. It was out of her but was stuck in what is probably her internal part that holds the first to go egg, as well as "other internal looking stuff". No normal vent is there.

There was a portion showing on the egg that was just egg (not enveloped like the rest). With a warm bath I very carefully work with that opening to get the egg. I tried to remove it but it was rock solid. Once removed we were in shock I was able to crack it open (but took a hard swack). It was a totally fine egg but bigger than we thought she would lay. Izzy's eggs (a red pyle banty) has cute little white ones, this one was typical full bantam size.

Anyhows... I have her in an incubator with heat, antibotics/electrolyte in the water and she is drinking some. Not eating, not even soft foods. I have her an 81mg aspirin to help with pain and have rubbed neosporin w/a topical pain relief all over what was her vent and "that area".

She's has a slow dripping of a white mess that I'm assuming is runny poo.

Has anyone ever experienced this? And what are her chances for recovery? I'm trying everything I can think of to keep her comfortable, hoping time will heal her.

Any ideas?

Update: This morning before I gave her another aspirin, washed her bottom and today I can clearly see the vent is still there, just a ball of stuff that looks like it should be inside, not out. It is smaller tho. Oh and never very much bleeding, just a few drops occassionally.

She also ate some scrambled egg and is picking through a mixture of feed, chick starter and scratch. And she perches on the side of the feed dish so she's isn't like laying down ready to die (yet). pray not.

She lets out little chirpy sounds when she tries to go potty.

I'm praying she doesn't hv another egg to lay soon... I did feel up there in the initial bath for any stuck and could find none. She's a newer layer so hopefully she's not an egg a day girl.

Important: Use the kind of triple antibiotic that DOES NOT have painkiller.
Some of the painkillers used in those kind of ointments are the kinds that end in "-caine". Those kinds are very bad for chickens.
Maybe putting a little personal lubricant in her vent would help with the next laying.
I'm sorry your little hen had such a hard time with this first egg & prolapsed. I'm glad you're taking such careful care of her.

So the prolapsed issue, can it repair itself? Does this repair itself? Is there hope? Is that her rectum that went out the vent with all her pushing?

I just went and checked the neosporin, no "caine"... I think it's the zinc that has pain relief? This is the generic brand that I use for my horses so hopefully that helped w/the no caine.

Poor baby girl, I feel terrible for her and will be so hard if she dies in my lap like Betsy did. The aspirin obviously helps, she gets perkier. Does anyone know if I can give more than 1/day? maybe am & pm?

Thanks for all the help and advice Speckled Hills!

this is interesting..sad, but I found this site..may help? I am not sure what the other is? I've not heard of this before? Will go hunt some more. Let us know how she is ok??

Ok, not sure, you didn't mention if she had a smell..but type in vent gleet. See if there are any familiar sounding things there.

i have been doing some research today and i guess you got to wash the prolapse and take your fingers and tuck the prolapse back in and rub some preperation h on her vent. keep her in the dark because that will delay egg laying. then give her a food like cracked wheat because you want to cut protein so she does not lay eggs and if she does they will be small. if the prolapse pops out again just repeat the washing and preperation h and tuck it back in. it may take time but sooner or later it will stay. also keep her away from your others until she heals fully. maybe you can post some pictures? good luck

Dang! I didn't even think about the light idea - thank you! I have her in a large aquarium to prevent drafts. I did try to push it back in during her initial bath but since it's smaller, I'll bath her tonight to make sure it's clean. I don't have Prep-H but do have:

Gold Bond (for healing, not lotion)
A&D Ointment
Arnica Cream

None have "caine" anything. I'm not close to store but could get Prep-H tomorrow. The idea of non-protein foods is an excellent idea. Thank you for researching for me...I've had the day off and playing major catch up.

I will try to take picks before/after bath tonight (but not for the weak of stomach). I plan on keeping her away from the flock (praying she makes it) until she is 100% recovered plus a week or so after the last aspirin or antibotic. Can't remember if I mentioned, but she's on cloth - not shavings for obvious reasons.

Thank you again. I'd give ya a couple dz eggs if you were close!!
