Utah!

I was in IFA on Saturday and it was so busy they had lines all the way to the end of the store. Lots of chicks and lots of bantams. I was just buying food and was proud of myself. I resisted. I don't have a brooder so thats a good excuse. There wer people buying them like crazy. Today at Cal ranch they were almost sold out. They had only 10 bantams that are of course mystery chicks

What kind of hatch rates do you see from shipped eggs? I realize this is an impossible question to answer I am just trying to decide do I have eggs shipped in or go ahead and pay more money for chicks to be shipped. I can buy 24 eggs cheaper than 10 chicks but in the end do you think I will end up with 10 chicks out of 24 shipped eggs?

i had about a 70% hatch rate from shipped eggs. it depends on who you buy them from how they are packed etc?

6kids, I have an AWFUL rate with shipped eggs, there are a few breeders that definitely are much better, but overall I would take the local eggs hands down over any shipped eggs.

I store mine in an egg carton, pointy side down with a book under one end of the carton, and I switch it each day, (to tilt the eggs back and forth to keep the yolk from sticking. I can't remember where I heard that, but I went with it. :D And I just keep them in the coolest room in the house, or a closet. I try to get them started within 10 days of being laid, viability drops after even 7 days...

I would ask Cynthia, she is always getting eggs shipped. I know her biggest complaints are late eggs and smashed boxes. But she would know best.

Shipped eggs...the biggest difference I see is, where I get them from. I have found, that the mid west is great! The upper North East is horrible. The mid East coast is not too good. I've had a great hatch from GA though.
California, you would think because it's closer would be good, but it really makes a difference if it is closer to us, as in closer to the border line of Nevada. Washington, ok..Oregon..ok. It's interesting how this really makes a difference.
I am waiting on some eggs right now..6 days out! What was I thinking when I origially bought from her? I knew that she was going to send me a lot of eggs..4 doz. One hatched. Didn't make it. Now, she just asked that I pay for shipping, and here we go again. She is sending around 3 doz. this time. Maybe tomorrow, that will be how long the last shipment took.
My fav. areas...Kentucky, Alkabama..MO. OK. KS. Arizona is pretty good. Tennessee.

I keep mine in our basement(food storsge) is about 50 to 60. I rotate them 3 times a day . Had one guy say he got 14 out of 18 . Holy crap!!! I wish

Well since we sold our chickens, goats and house in the country. And moved to town where we gave away almost everything that remained that was chicken related. We haven't been around at all. I thought I would stop by and say hi to everyone that knows us. And let you know the move has been very beneficial. the monster has friends and learned to ride her bike. And the boss is doing quite well. Even to the point she can exercise almost daily. Well any ways hi.

It's wonderful to see you, slvrphoenix! I'm glad the move has been good for you.

Clucking, I'm sorry you didn't get a better hatch rate. That's really sad.

Shipped eggs: I've only received shipped eggs once. Long story short, got 12 eggs, was only able to set 7. Had 6 hatch, but they weren't the breed promised so that was really annoying. That was from TN in December. I shipped to GA in Feb, and she had 9/12 hatch.
