Utah!

Here's the brooder set up I did tonight in our small shed. I made the new babies pen much bigger instead of using the kiddie pool I originally did, so that they had even more room to get away from the heat. Their grow pen is actually twice this size but I put the board up for now while they are still tiny so that they dont get lost or something lol then i'll open it back up in a few weeks. I screwed the heat lamp below the wood shelf, and its about a foot above the bedding. And its a 85watt bulb. Then I set up the other side of the pen for the older babies without a light and added the babies I got from you Cynthia to those ones. I sat in there with them for over an hour with the door & window closed to see how hot it felt and I was in a t-shirt and was feeling really toasty (But..I couldve been feeling warm cause of being preg haha). But it did feel pretty warm in there. So I dont know if thats a good thing or not for the babies..? I opened the window about halfway thinking that should offset it a little bit but I am hoping it wont be baking in there over night lol. I could always swap the bulb for an ordinary 70watt if you think it might be plenty in there. The shed is small like 12x12 and is insulated so its going to retain heat really well in there. Just want to make sure everything looks good, and both the tiny & older ones arent going to be too cold or too warm..

Okay great, thanks :) I hope they like it. Last night I was nervous and checked on them at 1am haha. They all seem fine this morning :) I brought in one of the new babies though because it has seemed pretty lethargic ever sense I brought it home. It is a great looking black so I am trying very hard to keep it alive. It doesent do very much and doesnt behave like the other chicks. Just kinda hovers in one spot, letting its wings drop and acts tired. I havent even seen it eat/drink yet so ive been giving it water/vitamins by hand, and lastnight I gave it my version of soup lol. (chick food heavily deluted in water w/ a drop of polyvisol vitamin) just so that it can get the taste for it and get the benefits from the food but still runny enough to drink. It fought it but I carefully made it drink it anyway. I said a lil prayer for it, not sure if it would be alive this morning but im surprised to see it is still alive this morning :) Not any better/not any worse. I fed it the soup again this morning. I am hoping all this effort pulls off and it makes it. I'll keep it indoors until I see it acting normal and eating/drinking on its own then ill put it in with the rest. I really want this one to make it, cause it's been hard trying to find blacks with these heads & its cheeks are extremely fluffy to. This is her :)

She is cute, where did you get her?

You don't want to give her too much V. I have had to feed some chicks. I pry open the mouths very carefully, put a couple of dry food in their mouths, and make sure it goes down with a couple of drops of water. They do fight it at first, but when they are thirsty, they go after that syringe! It may take a couple of days of feeding to get it up and going. By chance do you have any Cow Manna? I love this stuff. It is great to moisten and give it every other day, just one pellet, until they come around..or, a bit of scrambled egg..mostly the yolk.

I got her from sunnybrooke farms in sandy and I really like the quality of her chicks! She actually orders them in from cackle or another I cant remember. But all her chicks are beautiful. Not all had vaults but all were bearded and super fluffy. I grabbed 5 with the best vaults haha. 2 of which are whites ;) This black had prob the best vault of all of them. I couldnt believe how fluffy she was. I am determined to keep her alive lol. I pray its a girl ;) I have just been adding a drop of vit to the moistened food/water everytime I go to feed her 2-3 times a day. I just snook up on her to see what she was doing and I caught her eating!! I was soo happy lol. I crushed up the food myself to make it easier to eat and that seemed to help. Not sure if she's drinking on her own though. I have been helping her at least three times a day giving her the wet food/water/vit a day all mixed together. I've never heard of cow manna.. I've just been using her own chick food so that shes still getting food with her water even though its more like flavored water, but must be working because its the only time her poops have looked solid was after I fed her like this. She's probably only 2-3 days old.

I live in Salt Lake and will definitely be going to Duchesne, Utah soon for more chicks. I have sold most of my mail-order-hatchery chicks in order to make room for more of Christina's chicks (Desert Springs). I can not emphasize loudly enough to say that the quality of her chicks far outweigh any of the other chicks I have ever gotten from other hatcheries and/or breeders. When the chicks are side by side it is obvious which chicks came from Christina. I will be more than happy to transport chicks back to Salt Lake when I go if anyone wants me to bring them some. Duchesne is only a 2 hour drive up and 2 hours back, but it gets shorter every time I drive it. LOL I have not lost a single Desert Springs chick. They have all been healthy and strong. Quality is quality and is apparent in any breed and any species. You can just recognize it when you see it.

Ok I feel like I'm losing my mind. I have eggs disappearing . Lots .. I counted 5 in one box at noon at 4 there all gone . Can chickens move eggs from boxes that they would have to jump to get out?

If she had awesome looking silkies and you were able to bring them closer to Amercian fork/lindon I would totally take you up on that offer ;) But saltlake is still a lil far to drive to pick them up. Thats awesome though, hope you find some nice ones.
