Utah!

The night before last we caught a HUGE skunk in our traps. I noticed that a bunch of our corn had been stripped from the stalks and we assumed raccoon. Well, last night we set the traps again and sure enough, we caught another huge skunk!! My in-laws said they went out last night at there house because the dogs were setting up such a fuss and found a skunk trying to dig into their kennel to get the dog food! This must be a bad year for them! I would suggest walking around your coops and double checking, reinforcing any weak spots. Once the weather turns cold they get more desperate and will do anything for food.

Well I am not a grizzled sage but I know that they HATE the vanilla trees you put in your car. If you buy the vanilla flavor and hang them around your coop the flies stay away. We buy three of them and put them inside our covered porch and it keeps them from coming into the house. Works like a charm!
I tried those... didn't seem to help me :\

I had to buy those disposable fly traps, they smell, but man, do they work! and I sure noticed after it stopped working once the 30 days (give or take) was over!

I have to ask, how does one go about .. getting the skunk out of the cage? ey?

Gary, your sis just came by, she's a sweet lady. She lives close by all right! Enjoy that silkie girl. I am looking forward to photos as she grows. She's going to be gorgeous! Her toes are perfect. I think..tell me what you think about them.

FLIES--Sprinkle DE (Diotomaceous earth) around the coop and run it helps a ton! I have found it to be less useful for mites and lice, but it does help dry out litter and the flies seem to stay away from it. Aubrey, thanks for the tip about the air fresheners, will have to try a few of those around my patio window!

RJ, Funny thing is we usually get them really bad about the end of July, and I saw hardly any until the last week or so no they seem to be in my house every time someone opens the screen door. The landfill is closer to us so I figure we get a few more from the proximity...Too bad we can't sprinkle DE all over the house lol

That's too bad. The smell has to be quite strong. I had three trees on my 6x12 foot porch. The flies were terrible in the windows and after a day of the trees not one was in there.

We baited a live trap with cat food and they are happy as clams eating it and don't usually spray when the door drops down. You have to be a good shot and get them before they can spray. Once they are dead we bury their bodies pretty deep so the smell doesn't drift up.

I don't like the smell of those air fresheners either, no wonder flies stay clear. Thanks for the tip, hate flies. I was somewhat surprised to see these birds near me. A first for everything I suppose, I don't remember having raccoons in Cache Valley before 1980 or so. Thanks Pearls, Red… I think them a fine bird, for the job they do. Better than the magpies I think. Hate that squawking and chatter.

Thanks all & best to your birds,

RJ

well, maybe they did work for the most part lol! I had at least 6 hanging around my coop and run.... but since I've taken them down, thinking they weren't making much difference, there has been a lot more haha
