Utah!

I'm in Springville. Just got 6 Rhode Island Red chicks! It's already fun just to watch them. They have done well yesterday and today. Runnin around actin like chicks.

Hello cfack! And welcome to the Utah thread. Some very nice people in this group, and some very talented ones in your neck of the woods as well. I keep RIR's and they are one of my go to breeds, along with barred rocks. Good to see you are loving it, it just gets better and better.

Best to you and your birds,

RJ

Holy Cow Congrats Peaslee on your contest winnings from Valentine's Day! Best Hatch, and Best guess of exactly how many eggs. Wowza!!!!!

:yiipchick

Wow I can't believe I nailed the total number set.

On the other hand I think their was an error on the best hatch rate, because unless I calculated my numbers wrong, I only had an 83% hatch rate. Guess I better pm Misfitmorgan.

Thanks RJ! A little nervous about keeping the temperature just right in my brooder. Seems like it varies by ten degrees depending on the ambient temp of the garage. Its a 250 watt red bulb and I have it fully height adjustable as its hanging from a rope on the ceiling. Also watching close for pasty butt but am using ACV

cfak, as long as you chicks have enough space to move away from the heat source, they will self regulate by moving to an area that is comfortable for them. Just set the heat lamp so it is not any colder than 95 degrees, directly under the lamp.

I counted everything except for clears to calculate my haych rate, so I did actually get best hatch rate in the valentines-day HAL. Now im all jazzed up!

Sneaking these babies in the incubator so they can hatch before I set the easter hatchalong eggs lol So it will be interesting I have two bators full of eggs hatching on four different dates....I hope I get it right  !!

Welcome, cfak! I wouldn't worry yourself to death over the brooder temps. So long as the chickies have a spot to go in that feels toasty to your hand, and a cooler spot to get away from, just make sure the brooder is insulated/protected from the elements, and they should be fine :)

Oh Lisa, thou and thy temptress pullets...... Good luck! :)

Where is our Cynthia?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to BYC, and apologize if this has been discussed in the recent past...
I'm getting new chicks this week, and am debating between IFA and CalRanch - any suggestions? I'm open to other options as well, I just want to make sure my chicks are healthy and they come from a place that treats them well!!

Thanks in advance!
