Utah!

So cute!!! It's interesting that there's no variation in the colors in the chicks with the same moms and that Silver's baby is so light when she's so dark. I'm guessing #7 didn't make it?

Sadly, Seven pipped at the wrong end.

I suspect that the trip from the school to home had something to do with that. I was very pleasantly surprised that it didn't cause problems for the rest of them!

I thought the same thing about the colors of the chicks. The two NN from Buffy look like twins! And Killer's two are both teeny, tiny. They look like bantams even though they came from large eggs. I thought that Silver was white? Is she silver laced? That is interesting! I'm excited to see how she feathers out!

I just thought of something. I think the two little black babies I just hatched might be sex links! I think...maybe... I don't really know anything about chicken genetics, so I could be totally wrong.

Dizzy's rooster is a red NN and these two little ones came from a barred rock hen. So if I understand correctly, wouldn't they have white dots on their heads it they were roos?

abko--The red NN is solid red not partridge or anything like that?

I would think the chicks would be sexlinked unless the roo is a mix of colors/genes. Red sexlinks for instance won't work to make sexlink babies because they are a mix of silver/gold alleles.

Abkoldewyn, Yes, Silver is a silver laced Wyandotte, so it's interesting that her baby was a yellow chipmunk. I wonder if the yellow is a sex-link trait between her and my red naked-neck...

Below are Buffy (BO), Killer (barred rock), and Lucy (sex link). Those three were too busy hunting bugs to turn and smile for the camera... Or they just think they have cute fluffy butts.

All four were CAL Ranch 5-6 week old left-overs last spring.

Funny that you were thinking sex-link too. Here's a better picture of Igor. I don't know much about his genetics or history. He was given to me by a farmer down in the South Jordan/Riverton area and was going to end up in freezer camp if he wasn't adopted.

Now I really can't wait to see what happens! This might make an interesting science project for over the summer. I could have my boys help me feather sex them tomorrow or Tuesday then we'll keep an eye on them over the next few weeks and see what they end up being. It's too bad that Killer's two both have similar coloring and that we only have one from Silver, but we can still make it work

. This could be good! I always try and have something fun and interesting to keep their minds working while school is out.

My game hen is broody AGAIN and because she's brooding where she's suppose to be I'm letting her have five eggs so there's a few more to add to the mix. Genetics is interesting but not my strong subject!

I believe If the Roo is a true red, the chicks from the SLW would be white if male, red if female...the black ones from the BR hen would have white dots on heads if they were boys. I bought some sexlinked chicks from SLW and it worked on them. It will be interesting to see if it works on these, the roo almost looks like a wheaten roo looks, that color works as a gold allele for sexlinking as well if it is true.
