I thought broodies were the way to go?!? My frizzle had five chicks hatch last week and as of today, one is still alive. Grrr! She smothered three of them. Absolutely doesn't care what is going on when she sits down and won't move no matter how much her chick squawks. Is this normal or do I just have a doofus for a hen? I hate to say it but a machine and a heat lamp make better mothers at my house so far. I think I may have to go back to the trusty ol' Brinsea for any future eggs.

just like people some hens dont make good moms. i had a leghorn that always went broody but i would never of given her eggs because i knew she would be a bad mom. guess you now know not to give her any eggs to hatch. i am sorry for this bad experience

So sad! I've only ever had good broodies. My GLW are always amazing mothers. Some hens do seem more interested in the sitting on eggs then raising the babes, though. Such a sad experience. I'm sorry.

Oh so sad on your momma hen. I have had 3 broody's at my house. 2 are really really great moms. The other one is kind of so so... I don't think she would ever hurt the chicks, or anything, but both times they were always taken over by another hen. Yes, its like she does the sitting, and the other comes in and takes them. And I really think she does get a little sad about it, but this time she is the only one sitting, last 2 times they were all sitting, so maybe that is why. So she will have a coop with her chicks all to herself.
