Please, no one buy lemon verbena. I have it all over my yard. You can have some for free. It is the gift that keeps on giving: once you have it, you can never get rid of it. Ha ha ha it looks nice, though, and smell great too.

Would love some lemon verbena, I have managed to kill it in my yard twice. I can trade you Lemon balm, comfrey (excellent medicinal herbs) or flowers. In this rain its hard to find time to yank them out, but yanking must be done

Wow, no time to catch up, but I'm like freaking out... So I went outside to put the Momma Silkie on Lock Down in the Mini Coop. She has been sitting on Serama Eggs for 16 days, today is day 16. I'm going to Girl Scout Camp today-Sunday, and I wanted to make sure she was in there with food, water, and locked her in there in case anyone decided to come out at day 18. Well she has 1 chick already. OMG, I don't want to leave her now. And OMG its so so tiny. I've hatched Silkies but this little thing is way tinier. I would have never known if she didn't get up all excited that I put food and water in there. I still made her get out of the coop to go to the main food and water. Then she just like plowed over the baby and the eggs going back to her baby so fast when she was noticed I was looking. I didn't see anymore pips but I didn't dare move them. OMG I hope they will be okay in there, She is not the brightest of moms. Last year she hatched 2 clutches, and let the other Silkie take them, and she wasn't even Broody, she just took over. So she is not very mommy like. I just worry that they are so small they will get out of the nest box, even though its the floor one, but there is a little edge to separate, and they won't get back in to mom, and they are so tiny. And its so cold and raining. OMG I'm going to be worried all weekend. Grrrr....

Howdy all ya'all. I just went back in this thread one month. Can anyone guess how many pages that is? Well I really dont know but its a lot.

Ive been reading your stories and pouring over your pictures all morning. I have not seen a single duck. I saw a couple of references to wanting ducks, but no ducks.

So anyone in Utah that have ducks?

I don't have chickens. I can only handle one learning curve at a time and this year its ducks. Next year Im hoping for chickens but DH is a bit apprehensive. Duck math being like chicken math and all. I started with 2 ducks went up to 17 ducks now we are sitting at 13. We will only be overwintering 3-5. Nontheless, this year we are building a duck palace complete with 14x18x3 pond. yeah, i get into my hobbies.


Oh I also wanted to mention that I have been visiting IFA in riverton, sandy and slc locations as well as cal ranch and surprisingly the BEST selection of chicken stuff can be found at the SLC IFA. They get a larger variety of birds and stock more equipment & sundries than any of them. That really surprised me. I thought the more ---countrified stores would be better stocked. It seems that Back yard chickens have become so popular in the city they cater to the need. funny. Whodathunkit?

Did Chick in the Burbs get that job?

Magna & West Valley are not at all bad compared to Glendale &Rose Park. Like anywhere you just have to watch the area & stay away from "condensed housing projects" & apartments. I Live in Kearns. It was iffy 35 years ago when my bro went to HS here. Just have to watch the neighbourhood and god help you if you have to send your kids to the public school. My current neighbours arent so bad. Most ppl on my street own their homes so they take pretty good care. I want a home with more land so very much.

I do have extensive flower gardens, some herbs and various novelties. My favourite are tall bearded Iris, I have about 120 or so varieties of prize winners. I have a ton of plants to share, would LOVE to trade for farm fresh yummy eggs.

Is there anyone on here who would be willing to hatch out duck eggs? I dont have an incubator. well actually I dont have duck eggs yet either but im thinkin' ahead. LOL

Anyway, nice meeting you and I cant wait to get into this new hobby!

If I can successfully hatch out these chicks (first attempt ever)... in a year or so, I may try hatching ducks (don't plan on doing anything else for the rest of the year... except have this baby late july)... but I may just order me the kind I want from holderread farms next year (I really want some mini silver appleyards )

Someone a couple weeks back was talking about how they have black east indies ducks.... I love those but they are the only ones so far that I've heard talk about ducks.

My husband will be home. But he's really not going tongo out and check on her. He was like they are chickens. They food and water and you locked her in. So no one can go In or out. And it's 100% weather proof. And it's actually really sheltered from the weather. He's like they will be just fine. If I knew she would freak out about moving inside the house in my x large dog crate I would move her. But I'm worried she won't finish sitting. They will just have to be okay till I get home. Just worried about her not noticing she's not sitting on them to keep them warm. Just shocked there is one already. It's day 16. Wow

maybe put a heat lamp in there just in case? ... not that it would help unhatched eggs..... :\

Welcome Isadora! Seems like there is a lot more ducks with the Idaho Folks...the Idaho FB page, and the Idaho thread on here...(although the BYC Idaho thread is not as active). Pawtraitart has muscovies, she is in Paul Idaho, and on here now and then.

When I came to the BYC forum I laughed about "chicken math". I just dropped by for some information and then I was going to leave. I was just getting 20 egg layers and we were going to make sure they paid for themselves in time, so I watched every dime.

Then I realized how many cool chickens there were. And how many colors of eggs. And raising our own meat would be pretty easy. And I found bulk fresh feed for half the cost. And..........


Now I have 16 Gold Sexlinks, 4 Easter Eggers, 11 Silver lace Wyandotte, 6 Maran, 5 Lavender Wyandotte, and Cal Ranch had a batch of 4 day old Cornish X for 0.75 cents a piece so I picked up 15 of those.

In the end, I got crushed by chicken math! How did I end up with 57 freaking birds!?






The good news is I'm not completely insane. My buddy has an acre and is taking the cornish after 2-3 weeks. I'm going to cull all but the best wyandotte roo, cull or sell two EE roos, and keep only one Marans roo, but I have no idea what the sex is on 4 of them. That should bring me down to "out of my mind" from "completely insane".


Did I mention I have a test batch of sexlink over orpington eggs in the new incubator I built? My wife is both lovely and patient.
