Sphinx, so sorry! I HATE raccoons for that very reason. They are greedy and wasteful and I can't stand them. I hope you get the thing. Be careful because there may be more than one. I hear they love Pepsi, if you use a trap.

Oh, the peach fuzz. Do I detect color patterns different than their parents? I just want to snug these babies.
What color are you thinking you might be seeing? This is my first batch of bunnies so I don't know what color they would be. I guess the V pattern on the early fuzz is from the double mane on the lionhead. The do look like the points will be some darker color. Seal would be awesome, but I would love some Sable Points too. They do all look the same at this point.

I have a Marans that has a comb just a little bigger than the other two Marans it came with. Not big enough for me to decide if it's a male. He does have some copper showing up in his neck and the others do not. Is this a sign of a male or is copper coloring early a random thing?

Well after reading Sphinx's story I'm a little worried about the coop and run I'm building. I'm out in West Jordan and wasn't too concerned about predators but I think I may have underestimated my surroundings. What are the key pieces to a safe coop and run in suburbia?

I know a guy who lives right by the airport in West Jordan. He's owned chickens for several years and has never had a problem with the foxes that live in the field or raccoons. Unless you live very far west in West Jordan, I don't suspect raccoons would be a huge issue.
The main issue for him has been neighboring cats and dogs.

If you're really worried, I've heard hardware mesh works better than chicken wire to keep out chewing predators and some buried chicken wire around the perimeter will prevent diggers. But I'm not expert so I'd wait for a second opinion.

For us, I feel relatively safe since we'll be putting up six foot privacy link fence (which will be hard to climb) around our yard and we have dogs to help ward off anything that might come into the yard. We will, of course, still be locking them in the coop at night.
