Utah!

So with Marans, at a week, you really can't guess? That's what I'm picking up for myself. My brought home a couple day old chick from a school hatch project and a chicken friend pegged it for a bit right away. Every time I'd post a pic she'd comment with "boy". Pics I posted on BYC people kept telling me to wait longer. I did wait. It did end up being a boy. Lol. Darn it. I want those dark eggs! Hoping for better luck this time around.

There is a great thread on here somewhere about sexing marans early and they track it with pics. They are all over the place it seems. I have heard there is a line with the feathering gene, but I can't remember what line it was. This is just what I have picked up this year and experienced for myself with my first 4 Marans. I could be wrong.

I have a question too.

My Blue C. Marans just mounted a hen today...4 months old? What?  Can he fertilize eggs at this age?  Or is he just practicing?

I have had boys that young start mounting. I'm not sure how fertile they are at that point, though - I have noticed that a lot of the eggs won't develop to hatch, even with a bullseye. I don't think they get potent enough to sire a lot of chicks until they're a little older.

Does anyone have a rooster collar I could borrow for a few months here in SLC? I want to get my one rooster to be big enough for freezer camp, but according to my neighbor, he sounds like a squeaky toy in the morning.

I tried the toddler sock. Only kept he quiet for a few days. I think the feel of having it on distracted him. I'm doing 2" velcro now. You just put the velcro back to back to stick it together and cut a length that you think will fit around its neck. I keep thinking I have the right fit or maybe too tight but like the sock, it just seems to distract him for a few days and then I have to readjust again. I'm not sure if it lisens over time or what but I got the industrial strength velcro.
