Utah!

Nope, a red light when it is 10 degrees or below but not supplemental past that. I do put a little solar night light in the coop so they will be able to see their way up to the roost but it is very dim and goes out after a couple hours.

Do you folks use artificial lighting for the winter to maintain egg production?

I have a 60 W bulb on a timer, it comes on at dusk ( I adjust it to go on at about 5 pm when its the dead of winter and dark out) and goes off at 9:30 pm, then comes on at 7 am til 9 am. I have a red spotlight that is 85 w but makes a nice heat circle on the coop floor that goes on when it is 10 degrees or less but they never really go under it. I don't use the red heat lamps anymore, they knocked one down a few years ago and started a fire in the pine shavings, I am too scared of that happening again. The spotlights come in green and red and have really thick glass, I really like them.

I have a night light too, when the light goes off suddenly it definitely helps so they can get to the roost.

Utah county fair? I was wondering if anyone was going and if so did you see any Silver Laced Wyandotte for sale? I think the guy that used to have nice ones around here had a coon attack. :(

That is what I'm planning on Lisa. 6:30am to 9am and then 5pm to 9:15pm. I'm using fluorescent bulbs, but I decided to start the lights now because I read that it can agitate them later if the lighting changes suddenly. I'm going to try to find a solar night light for any surprised during lights out.

Are Welsummers known to be noisy? Mine is by far my noisiest hen. If we don't let them out very early in the morning she whines and cries like a puppy. :/ All my other hens are fairly quiet but she has to make some kind of noise all day long.
not sure but mine is the loudest for sure, always begging for treats and such. it can get annoying at times but i love her. she mainly talks when she sees or hears me.

for lighting the coop in winter i try to let my girls rest a bit but then i start having the light come on a bit. i use a clear led rope light that i hung up with pipe strap. it stays cool, does not take a lot of power and gives off lots of light

I think I have to do a bumblefoot surgery tomorrow

. I am sure this is probably because I put in a higher roost to stop the bedtime terrorizing of the new chickens.....if it is not one thing it is another

I put yes in your ovation remark area...I use a small light bulb in late fall before it gets real cold, a 25 W...with a timer, then.....

I just use a heat lamp in the winter, with a timer..that's light enough for them.
