Utah!

@sundancenbare thanks. I'm going to try and get up there Saturday.

@La Casa de Pollo those silkie/frizzle chicks I hatched are adorable and getting bigger. Any tips on sexing them?

None! Other than a random boy that will pop up early on with early crowing, a giant purple comb, or mahogany coming in on the shoulders...,the rest are so hard to tell. I gave away three showgirls that were chest bumping and hopping like mad, and they all ended up being girls...so even their behavior can defy typical gender stereotypes. I was positive they were boys! This years hatches seem to be especially hard to tell. Then I've got one out there crowing at 4 months with a really round pullet crest and zero comb, just flat and skinny.

Thanks. Kinda what I figured, but I was hoping...

I guess I'll just have to pick who's staying based on color. I've got that blue show girl and a cute white splash that I'm hoping one of them ends up a girl.

I hope so too! I wish it were easier to tell. I have still a bunch in that growout pen that I have no idea what they are, besides cute :D Haha :p

We went down to the show last night. There was one other family walking through as we finished up. I'm not sure if it was official show hours or if those are only today but the club members were in middle of cooking dinner but all very friendly. :) we walked around in peace and quiet looking at all the birds. Quite a few birds but I was really surprised at the lack of breeds represented. Hardly any LF. Mostly bantams but no silkies. We fell in love with a little frizzled serama that was for sale. My daughter begged and begged to bring her home. I think we're heading back down there this morning to see what it's like in full swing. :)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!  I think I will try to sterilize a needle and poke to see what comes out.  If it's pus filled, are antibiotics warranted?  If so, is there a specific (or at least broad spectrum) type for chickens I can pick up from IFA or the likes?

On a happier note, we ordered a custom built coop that should be coming in this evening.  Our A-frame coop has been working fine but the run portion is very difficult to keep clean as you have to crawl inside on your hands and knees - not fun on the back nor pleasant to come out only to find your pants covered in poo :p

How it going? I'm on a chicken health page and they use Scarlex scarlet oil for everything. You can get it at IFA or TSC. I treated a duck we rescued a couple weeks ago with it. Something had bitten a huge chunk out of her leg and it was infected. Birds don't have liquid puss. It's hard and kind of like cheese. We had to soak it in Scarlex many times a day and pick the infection and feathers out if that area and then it started healing right up. Also gave her a couple injections of penicillin that you can buy at feed stores, got her nice and healing and off to a new home. :) Anyway, I would keep Scarlex away from her eye but maybe you could soak a q-tip and put it on the area multiple times a day?

Thanks to Diana and Lisa for convincing me to join. Can't wait to get my flocks started.
Welcome!
