Utah!

Yes there were three but one walked out before I could pull the (trigger) er, push the button on the camera. The DWR has asked if they could trap here on the property, and we asked to do so please! I have big ol turkey droppings on all of my sidewalks and blacktop driveways, it is just messy, nasty & ugly. We have seen over a hundred at a time on the place. Also they don't seem to mind people much…

While I am here, do any of you know of or have apps to recommend, for or about chickens. Things that would or might be of use on a mobile device. AND are there Facebook pages of local interest to the chicken keeper? I would be a bit backward on those type of things, but believe that many of you may not be so.

Thanks everyone,

RJ

Do the turkeys just stay at your place during the winter, or are they there all spring and summer too?

Birdman, congrats on finally getting your CL! Sounds like she is settling right in :)

Ace, you have enviable crocheting skill. My mom taught me a very basic chain stitch wen I was little, but I've long since forgotten how to do it. I knit now. Love those activities.

RJ, yes, I do indeed still have four Icelandics. I have not had any takers on them. I guess the surge of popularity is calming down :/

And those are some handsome Rio Grande boys visiting your coop! Pesky, for sure, but pretty. It makes me miss my hen, Betty. I can understand your feelings about the leavings on your patio. Turkeys are messy! I had to laugh when people tried to talk me out of getting ducks, citing the whole messy factor. My response was, "Have you ever had turkeys?" I sure love picking up their feathers, though. Hope the DWR can help you with crowd control!

It's been a while since I posted one of my crochet items...

What is your favorite feeder and why? Pics too please! I'm needing a different feeding solution in my run.

Our girls have officially called it quits for the winter. They are so fed up with the cold and snow, they have decided they'll just hang out in the roost or sit in the nesting boxes all day. I was hoping the nest box sitting was them getting prepped for laying eggs but they've been chilling in there for days now and I'm pretty sure there are no eggs to be had.

EDIT: We currently have a pvc chicken feeder. I'll probably make a different one come spring because they somehow STILL get food everywhere. Amazing.

I have a hen that went broody! so watch out for that ;)

Bitsy, have I told you this year how much I like the photograph you captured for the 2016 BYC calendar yet? I still like it a ton. I always get a grin when I see you avatar, which of course is the noted picture. Me thinks that is awesome!

Red, I did not know the type of turkey infection I have had names, but then I know little of this wild type. They were back in the coop again today while I was cleaning out the banty coop, snuck in the old coop and cleaned out half a feeder of lay pellets.

They must have hollow legs like my children once had.

I raised white turkeys to eat thirty five years ago or so, I don't remember them being as large as these wild ones. They are not native around here, the DWS dropped a few off ten to fifteen years ago and from this small beginning we have the infection we endure today. I will say the bronze sheen they give off of their wing feathers is very pretty, while they were running back and forth on my roost poles, the light would catch and it was just Wow!

Lisa, thanks for all you do.

So a cool but blue bird day around my place and I cleaned out the banty coop, sat with the birds and had a lovely day. My first extra nice day of the new year, I hope to have many, many more of such events. I parked in my in coop chair and had a regular parade of beautiful hens across my lap, each in turn trying to vie for my favor. I in turn hope to have past muster and pleased them in some way as well. Henry Penny says hi to everyone. I can see the dry winter weather is sapping the moisture from the girls combs, must be time to give everyone a dose of Bag Balm on shanks, waddles and combs. They look so pretty all fitted out…

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

I have a feeder like in that link and it works just fine. I added about 2 or 3 inches of pipe to the hole the chickens eat out of to make it deeper to reduce how much they spill. I also added a few inches of pipe to the bottom so it sat a little higher. I filled that bottom part with sand so food couldn't fall down where the hens couldn't reach it. That feeder works great in smaller coops.
