Utah!

Our girls have officially called it quits for the winter. They are so fed up with the cold and snow, they have decided they'll just hang out in the roost or sit in the nesting boxes all day. I was hoping the nest box sitting was them getting prepped for laying eggs but they've been chilling in there for days now and I'm pretty sure there are no eggs to be had.

EDIT: We currently have a pvc chicken feeder. I'll probably make a different one come spring because they somehow STILL get food everywhere. Amazing.
Link on how to make it: http://themobilehomewoman.com/?p=8088

They can easily take their beaks, and scrape backwards with them .. with these feeders. Any feeder, but I think the best one is grandpa's feeder. Just wish I could afford one right now.

I use these for now.

If the food isn't all the way to the top, on the bottom part whee they eat from, then they can't push as much out with their beaks, and, they can't scratch it out.

Grandpa's chicken feeder..I think it's better known for keeping critters out of it..like sparrows!

I can see that they could also spill with this.

Bitsy, have I told you this year how much I like the photograph you captured for the 2016 BYC calendar yet? I still like it a ton. I always get a grin when I see you avatar, which of course is the noted picture. Me thinks that is awesome!

Thank you! that means so much to me! It was my first time taking photos with a good quality camera! I got several good shots of most of my chickens, but that was the only one I felt was really superior :D I can't wait for spring so I can take some more shots of them! (well, I could now, but it's just too cold! lol)

Bitsy, I agree with RJ. Love that picture!

RJ, turkeys are pigs. They are inquisitive and cute and silly, but they are pigs. I have had to get after mine before for hogging the food from the chickens. Maybe I'll have to come bag one of those jakes in the springtime so that my girls have a boyfriend to do the manly thing, lol (kidding) I'm rambling now, so I'll stop there.

Ok, so DH is really getting adamant now about putting eggs in the incubator. He insists that we could put some of the jumbo eggs from the grocery store in because they look fertile. Sounds like we have an experiment coming up....

Red, I'll catch one for you should you wish… in fact you can have your pick.

Well today I introduced my self to the time honored art of building wire cages.

Perhaps those of you who keep rabbits and such are experienced and or aware that for a beginner, it can be a tad unforgiving. I may have as many J Clips on one wire as I do on two, it is in successfully joining two or more, that one is able to construct a cage. I have had to come in for lunch and give it a rest, but though it may make an interesting topic for the bird lovers we have here. I am building with an eye to spring, for broody cages and what ever else comes up or needs to be penned. So no rush, and turned out that is good… I may be there a while.

Always best to be prepared LOL! Good Boy Scout you are. The cages sound interesting I'd love to see a pic of one after you are done, hard to picture it from the description but it sounds like a great idea!

Thank you for the pic! What kind of birds are these? So pretty. I also have a pvc feeder but the girls refuse to use it. It must have some bad juju or something because it seems as though it needs to be feared. They go out of their way to avoid it. I've hand fed them from it multiple times to show them it is safe to no avail.

They are EE's, and the black is a blurred photo of my black frizzle. Thank you. :)

RJ - I do? Yay! I can't see it on my phone. I will have to look when I can get my computer hooked up.

Lisa, didn't you have coturnix quail? Or were those bobwhites?
