Utah!

Hahaha, cool. Thanks RJ! He was one of the Icelandics I hatched from my flock. He ended up going to camp, but he was pretty. I need to pick a new avatar - just can't decide on one.

So after my disappointing foray into cage building yesterday, I retreated and last evening, after much meditation and soul searching… well today I am a triple black belt with oak leaves J-Clip ninja! Yes sir, I apparently developed astonishing skill over night and fear no wire, nor J-Clip. Cage completed. Chicken stuff/things seem to draw a lot of time from us, I can't wait for above fifty temps with bluebird skies to work on my birds and projects. So I've to find a way to use 20 degree days without noticeable rain/snow/mix. Plus it would seem that I am or I am becoming slow. Things just seem to take a lot of time to accomplish… But I am somewhat steady with the work, and it would seem to be a good thing.

Those of you whom hatch, what seems like year around, how do you handle the brooding of endless chick cycles? Can someone please tell me how this is done? Almost the middle of the month and I can hear chicks on the horizon.

Way to go RJ! Woohoo!

I am very sad tonight. One of our kitties must have a bad tooth, and I have an appointment with the vet for Friday morning, but it looks like I am taking him first thing tomorrow, instead. His face got really swollen today and I just know it's that good for nothing tooth! :( I'm so worried about him. Sorry, I know, chicken forum. But my cats are my babies too and I need to vent.

Thanks bitsy. Just got back from the vet and they are keeping him overnight. He has a nasty abscess that needs to be drained, but he will be okay. I'm so relieved! I don't like any of my animals suffering.

Congrats on the cages! We made our first set of rabbit cages last summer and they turned out great. J-Clips can be a bit tricky.

This is my first year hatching year round and I will tell you I have not figured it out. you need space and lots of it. Warm space. I have been brooding in my garage. You have to clean often to keep the smell down and the wife happy. Besides that I have lost one to moving it to the next stage too quickly and one because it was too small in the mixed age brooder. I have two setups and I probably need at least three.

Then when they do feather out all the way and they are still so small I'm too nervous to put them in a coop in nighttime freezing temps and some daytime freezing temps.

The third thing is my energy bill. I'm running a light full time and a space heater part time. It was WAY more expensive than I thought.

The reason I did it, and I would do the same thing again, is because I bought one mating pair of expensive, hard to get Wyandottes and I wanted to increase my numbers and chance of having more of them in the future. If I waited until spring and a predator or sickness killed one or both of the pair then I would be kicking myself in the head.
