Utah!

I agree that it's nowhere near enough, but I do think it's a step in the right decision. It's also a landmark step in making the farming/animal industry more humane. I would like to see the laws more like what California is trying to enforce, but at least it is a start.

In the meantime, the people here are showing contempt for current egg practices in the most effective way possible- with our pocketbooks. We're raising our own chickens to lay eggs, and don't support inhumane treatment of chickens by purchasing their eggs.

so the new nest boxes are working out very well. i had one girl lay on the ground under the nest box today but for the most part all the girls that are laying are useing the boxes. i love that they are so easy to clean. the price is so worth it! its plastic but its very thick plastic. and unlike my old set up it does not take up floor space. i may go back and buy another but i will see if its needed first

That's great bird man. So they are all roosting together, except for that one? Trying to figure out where it's favorite resting place went. lol
I was going to ask you about your lighting. I know you have the string of lights right? They don't really put out much heat at all, and I know you don't use a heat lamp. So, question is, are your birds laying for you since you have the light? No heat needed to have them lay through the winter?

when i said lay i mean laying an egg. they all roost together now, my lighting is rope lights, its leds in a line in a clear flexible tube, its about 17 feet long in total i think. it takes very little energy, the leds do not burn out and it does not heat up at all. the ones laying are laying just as good as they were in summer. and yeah no heat is needed for them to lay in winter. the lights is on from 4 am to 4 pm

Does anyone have any bantam hens? I have 2 crazy bantam hens who hate eachother so I have them in separate cages and they are each so lonely. I want to get each of them a friend prefferably a bantam hen unless it is a Serama Rooster. I can have a Serama Rooster only :)

Well, my broody hen has gotten the best of me. I gave it a week and couldn't keep her out of the nestbox day or night for more than a minute. I even moved her when she was asleep and she'd hop right back down and get back on the nest. Today I got fertilized eggs from my wife's grandfather (giant BCM over whatever tan hens he has) and gave them to my broody girl. Whatever hatches I'll give back to grandpa to keep unless anyone else wants them. It's up to mother nature now.

Uh oh. My two lavender ameraucanas are bumping chests. That's a very bad sign, isn't it?

Not at all! They are just playing. They will charge each other, not matter the sex when playing. I have three pullets that I am keeping from McMurry, and the one lavender, and they have been charging like crazy, just playing because they want to move around more. That's why I put them outside in a bigger place for them. When they get used to it, they will be real flighty and run around, it's cute when they get that extra room.
I'll look up a site on that..maybe..I'll find one. ? :)

Here is a good site.. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/323950/chest-bumping
