Utah!

Cynthia--Good job on your dentist appt! Nice not to have to go back for cavities :) Yes, I will get a nice blue egg, and one of these will be a girl, I am totally optimistic :)The coloring on the blue/splash/ whatever it turns out to be/ is interesting for sure. My lavs are turning, well, lav! This little one reminds me of my white EE when she was little. That's why I can't help but wonder if it will be light with the splash pattern. It is fun to find out....I will call her my mystery chick for now lol! My daughter loves her and claimed her to be hers. She still has albino/red/pink looking eyes. She is the tiniest of the new four, but the fastest. I feel really lucky to have her given the hatch problems with that batch. She is a survivor, along with your little blackie :)

You KNOW when I go out to my coop, and for the first time I see a blue egg, this summer......if i do not pass out first)I am going to be posting a big giant picture of it on here and you are going to be going crazy too, you have been the accomplice to getting me that blue beauty :)

Hello, I am just starting my first coop and I am in Heber, Ut and am curious if anyone knows where a good place to get chicks or hens and what are good breeds for egg layers. Any information would be great and appreciated. I also have children so I am hoping for mild tempered birds

Thanks!

I will be getting chicks hopefully next week, I am waiting for my ecoglow to arrive. I think I'll get them from IFA at 2100 S, they had a good selection and they kept someone right by the birds to make sure they were being watched. I really need pullets only so IFA/Cal Ranch seems to be my best bet.

Hi myjessejane! Welcome!
My best layer that is really really good with kids is a Plymouth Barred Rock. Buff Orps are usually pretty mellow tempered as well :)

Thanks!

if it was me i would talk to cynthia that you see post in this thread, she has been hatching out a bunch of chicks and is very good with them. she is hatching out some buff orpingtons soon so she may have some chicks for sale, they are a great layer of brown eggs and are known for being very sweet birds. you can also go to a feed store like cal ranch or ifa. i also love the sex links, some of mine are sweet but some are not so nice. they lay brown eggs and are very good at it. i have the black sex links. easter eggers are always cool with the green or blue eggs and they are fair layers and some of mine are the sweetest girls in my flock and one even is named sweet cheeks because of it

Spinx-- Thanks for that link! I've called them and left a message, so hopefully they will call me back soon. :) I didn't kow there was a facebook group to get the chickens legalized around here. I'll have to go searching for it! The only pics I have (shamefully) of my BLRW's are from last fall, and they are SO much prettier now! I am going up there Wednesday, so I'll take pics and post them then!

My Sportsman is listed as being on the FedEx truck for delivery today. I can't wait to get it and have it set up!!

Sphinx, Cynthia----for a point of reference here...I have another pic of the lavs. The girlish looking one has lots longer shoulder wings----you can see the difference here. So if you look at yours maybe yours matches one of these to help us guess what gender? But I might have it backwards haha! I just know the not so girlie has HUGE feet, huge legs, and I can see 3 rows on the pea comb starting, and it is more raised.

Both together: Girlie on right

Congrats on no cavities, Cynthia!!!

Jessie, if you don't mind straight run, I would definitely get your chicks from Cynthia. If you need pullets, I've had great luck with IFA. My EE were really great with the kids- they'd let my kids carry them around, and they laid quite a few beautiful green and blue eggs. I've also heard good things about sex links and barred rocks.

Donna, I have 5 BLRW chicks, so I'm dying to see yours as adults.

I took down my webcam yesterday. I had to move the babies into the bigger tote so they'd have more space, and that tote just isn't conducive to the webcam. I'm not hatching anything right now. I plan to do a couple of batches, but I'd planned on incubating them in my kids' classes, so I won't be able to do webcam for that. Bummer. :-(

I'm not sure what to think of my lavs. They seem to be feathering in so much more slowly than my BLRW, and that makes me worry that they're both boys. I'll take pictures and post them. The one is still HUGE compared to the other. The bigger one also has three distinct rows, though the comb is tiny.

Big chick on the left.

The comb isn't in focus, but you get a good comparison shot of their shoulder feathers.

My Sportsman is here! Yay! It is all plugged in and set up. Tomorrow I'm going to move the eggs I have in the little giant over to the Sportsman so I can sit and stare at them through the acrylic door.

Sphinx, I am going up to Duchesne tomorrow, so I will definitely get some nice pics of the BLRW's then. I feel like a bad chicken parent, not having more pics of them!

Hmmmmmm Your big one looks like my big one, your small one looks like my small one. So we could conclude that either we both have big boys and small girls OR they are only looking different because of their hatch size and bigger chicks feather differently than smaller chicks......interesting! I would not worry too much about them being slower than the BLRW--- Cynthia mentioned Ameraucanas feather in more slowly...and I read that too on a breeders site. Cross your fingers!
