Utah!

sad about the pencils but they will get over it. lisa congrats on the bigger coop! that is a nice size run too. i got to meet red today at cal ranch, very nice to meet you red. i swear i have seen you there before but who knows. i nearly walked out with a duck today, they were too cute!

Lisa- Great coop addition! Very nice and I love all the property you have.

Well I thought I would update you on my eggs. I finally got my new incubator in the mail yesterday. My eggs have been in the still air incubator for 6 days now. We transfered them to the new incubator tonight after letting it run for a day to make sure it kept a good temperature. I candled each one before placing them. Out of 15 eggs that were sent one had a small crack, 4 weren't fertile, one had a bacterial ring, I put two under my broody Silkie, and the rest went in the new incubator. (8) I'm not sure all of the eggs are growing live embryos I saw veining but some were more than others. My DH was helping me and we took the eggs we felt had nothing in them and cracked them open just to make sure and to confirm what we felt we saw and I'm happy to say we were right with every one of them. So at least I can identify non fertile eggs! Oh and a bacterial ring. So I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.

My little broody Silkie is so cute with the two she has under her. I'm really hoping the eggs she has under her hatch. She is so determined. I finally had to take her off of them and have her move around and get something to eat. It had been two days since I think she had been up. Should I be having her get up daily? She really complains at me when I do it.
So thats my update. I have been dying over all the little chicks being posted. I can't hardly wait. I hope I get a few. Ugh. All of you are such a bad influence on me! I had to go into the IFA store just to see the chicks. My DH was with me (bad mistake) and took my hand and lead me out the door empty handed. I'll just go back without him but will probably wait until I have chicks so they will be about the same age. Hope they will still have some.

One more thing do any of you have rabbits in with your chickens? I would really like one but not sure if it would work out. I really want Holland Lop.

Auntie Hattie---so glad you have some eggs doing well! I was worried when you posted about the bacterial ring. That is something I have not read about. I thought UH OH! Is there a way to explain what it looks like? Some of mine have dark circles, wondering if that is it.

Thanks to everybody for the nice comments on our coop. I really liked the first one best, but I had to choose either add on or quit buying chickens.....duh lol

there is a disease that can move back and forth between rabbits and chickens so there is some risk but that said i have my flemish giant mix in with my chickens and it works well, i do keep her in a pen at night because she digs out. she has her own water bottle but she drinks from the chickens water too and she will eat scratch. they show each other respect and it works well.

Hi All, I have an order of miniature (bantam) ducks coming from Holderread Waterfowl in early May (May 1 or 2). I am probably going to raise 3-4 of them myself, and will be looking to sell off the others for $12. each. If you are interested, please let me know. These little guys get to be around 2.5-3 pounds when fully grown. I'm really looking forward to finally having ducks to eat my slugs!

Yeah, it's hard sometimes to just walk away from them. I almost walked out of IFA yesterday with the sweetest little BA ever - then made myself get the Wyandotte I came for. And it was good to meet you, too! You're taller than I expected, hehe. Seriously, I appreciate the help with the trap.

Aunt hattie, it sounds like you're having a lot of fun with hatching eggs. If you happen to get a picture of your silkie, will you post it here? She sounds cute!

Well, upon making sure everyone was safely in the coop tonight, we found out that Jerry had somehow gotten his head stuck in some chain link and.......he didn't make it. Dead as a doornail. Am I really that bad of a chicken keeper?

Poor little guy. I guess I don't have to worry about the raccoon getting him now, but seriously, enough is enough.

On a better note, though, I got two more of my chicks out to West Valley, and I'm so glad to have them here! Of course, that means more pressure on me to get the run done, but hey, I have my babies where I can see them every day. They're the two pullets I got from Hector, and MAN, are they getting big! Hector, I'll get some pictures uploaded as soon as I can. My computer is in pieces right now while I fix an overheating problem, but once it's back up and running, I'll upload photos of the girls! I'm really excited, too, because I was looking at the Delaware, and her tail is getting wide. I think I read somewhere that it's a preferred trait to have a wide-tailed Delly over a narrow-tailed one. Er....not sure that makes sense, but yes.

Okay, now to go and stalk these fabled pictures of Lisa's coop............

Sdwarren, glad you got approved! Some people are such sticklers, and it's not always for a very good reason. Hope your neighbor calms down a bit after he sees that having chickens around isn't so bad. Especially since wild birds like starlings and sparrows probably carry more disease than domesticated poultry.

Lisa, WOOOW. Nice coop! And I loved the little commentary panels with the chickens. Made me laugh.

yeah it was so hard to leave them, i wanted the large white ducks but honestly i do not need ducks. yeah i am a tall guy, 6 foot 10
