Utah!

Thank you, Sphinx. I've been worrying about putting the hurt chick back in with the rest of the group after she will have spent time away from them. I was happy that when I put them on neutral ground outside yesterday that they acted like nothing had ever happened. It gives me hope for a peaceful future. :)

That's funny that you mention Suzie from Warmblood; I talked to her just last week over the phone and we are going to be getting a couple Welsh Harliquin ducklings from her in the middle of May. My oldest daughter isn't so much into the chicks, but she loves her ducklings! (She has two Anconas now.) And thank you for the offer to incubate some eggs, but you're right...I'd rather they be in your control. ;)

Sasha-I am in Logan--- mine are currently in use but there is plenty of room if you wanted to put some in with mine. I have one used to incubate until lockdown that has 2 more batches in it but room for 14 eggs, in three days room for 25. Then I have to use the other one for lockdown because of the different batches/due dates. I would be glad to incubate them and/or hatch them out. You could put them in with mine for a couple weeks and after I am done (4/26 ish for those wheaten ameraucanas and marans) you could take them home for lockdown/hatching when your due date gets closer if you wanted to try and transport.... Or I could do it here for you if you would rather not risk moving them :) whichever works!

I agree on your roo :( Looks like a EE boy, the coloring matches the boy tendencies. If you put him on KSL you could try and sell him. I just sold mine for $5 it only took a day.

My first batch were mean as heck to each other, I had a few I needed to re-home because once they started fighting it would not end, open wounds that we had to superglue shut, it was gross. I hope yours decide to co-exist peacefully! I have had no problems since I rehomed my meanies.

I agree too. In my experience I have never seen a hen that color...almost like you could sex EE's of this color. I had EIGHT of these and not one was a hen.

I'm afraid I agree with birdman, Sasha. Your suspicion of that little EE being a roo is likely correct. His face is getting pretty red for his age, in my opinion. And he could just be a beardless Easter Egger. Whatever the case, he sure is cute! I'm loving his coloration.

Ahhh, that makes the rescue in me want to go buy them all and put them in qt and get their little butts taken care of. :(

I went to the IFA in Riverton today (I don't usually go to that one but I was meeting my parents to get 2 of my kids back from an sleepover) and holy cow, the chicks there are in bad shape. So much pasty butt, so many laying around looking generally sick and I think I may have seen a dead one. Oh my gosh, I would NEVER buy birds there. The IFA in AF has good enough conditions, the one in SLC where I got most of mine was good too. That Riverton IFA gives the entire company a bad name. They had no one over by the chicks, people were reaching in and choosing their own, obviously no one cared about the pasty butt. The pasty butt was very noticeable, not just a tiny bit but a lot. My daughter was really mad seeing all of it. So, don't buy any chicks from that IFA, they do not treat them well. I almost got a Delaware but I couldn't bring myself to get a sick baby and put her in with my healthy girls.

Lisa, you must have a heart of gold! The eggs haven't shipped yet, hopefully today, but the breeder is being a little slow getting back to me.

I'll let you know as soon as I hear from her and it's a "for sure" thing!

I put my SLW roo on KSL for FREE. I had ONE call on him. I can't even give him away, what the heck? Will repost him today. Trying to make a decision as to whether or not I want to keep the EE roo. I really like his personality, but can't breed him with anything. I also have a bully SLW pullet. Definitely a girl, but she bullies the others around more than either of the roos! LOL

I'm fighting this constantly now. Last year the feedstore had someone renig on a big chick order and didn't tell them until the poor babies had rubbed off all their feathers on their head (too tall for the brooder) and everyone had pecked everyone else's butt clean. A year later they still have bare butts! I gave two (golden lace) to my neighbor hoping that a new environment would shake them up a bit and change their behavior. It worked with one (and I'm so jealous, she's beautiful now). The other prolapsed and so I took her back. After a little qt for healing (she's still laying an egg/day despite!), I purchased her a "dress" (saddle). It's working like a charm and she's in with my older girls now. So I ordered 5 more and hope they arrive this week. Found them on Facebook under a page called Louise's Country Closet (or www.louisescountrycloset.com). Just $5, free shipping. I actually bought just the one for a pattern, thinking I'd make more but heck, I wouldn't be saving that much and why not help out a fellow chicken lover's business! I purchased wild pattern colors hoping that'll confuse the hawks. There's cutsey patterns if you don't have predator prolems. I'm hoping this will put an end to my poor bare butt girls!

Anyway, just a thought if anyone has the same issue. I purchased Large and it hangs over nice. Don't spend the 50-cents on snaps, I thought that was to help it stay on but it just a snap for the straps in case you have a hen with a wing issue that you wouldn't want to strech the strap over. I had no problems. Sometimes the dress part slides to the side but it'll fix itself quickly and although the other hens were amused at first they have left it alone.

Hope your girl heals quick!

Playing catch-up!
Saturday, the DH and I went into Logan to do some shopping at Lowe's and Home Depot. We were gone maybe an hour when our 14 year old daughter called and said "The chicks were picking on one of your Ameraucana's and she's got a bloody tail!" They went into a frenzy at the first drop of blood (still have no idea what originally happened but have a couple guesses) and they all started yanking on my poor girl's tail. Thank goodness the kids were here and able to pull her out right away, or it could have been MUCH worse! So little Ms Muffet (because of her cute muffs!) is in a little cage all by her lonesome, which is sad, but the fun part about it is she's bonding much closer to me now. :)
I cleaned up her tail and there doesn't seem to be any flesh wounds. It looks like one of her new tail feathers must have broken and those veins growing the new feathers bleed like crazy, causing the other chicks to freak out and go cannibalistic.

I have two pips you guys!

I'm really shocked one is a Marans egg, as I was just SURE they were a day or two behind the others.

I understand about the rescuing. Part of me wants to swoop in and save all those babies at the feed store!!

I'm in the short story contest from the easter hatch. I'm really hoping I get a couple of votes; I'd feel really stupid if I didn't. Here's a link to the stories if you want to read: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-hatch-a-long-short-story-contest-please-vote

ElkMntCove-thanks for the website! I think I'll order a couple saddles now, because you never know what the future holds.

Sphinx-Yay! I hope the hatch goes smoothly.

Oh, Sasha, I don't blame you at all for not going with my dicey proposition. I'd been thinking and thinking about what kind of eggs to incubate at the elementary school, but the more I think about it, the less I want to gamble with anything really great, you know? I'm leaning towards just buying some various mix eggs, and then selling what I get, and doing a fun hatch afterwards. Or, I could just count myself done after the elementary hatch....

I'm distracting myself so I don't hang out at the preschool all day by working on a quilt. I know, the dorkiness, it burns.....

Cool - I ordered the Red Bandana and it looks so cute & country on the hen. Just FYI....I don't know this person at all, I somehow came across ADozenGirls on FB who mentioned she (Louise's) was having a contest. I didn't win but that's the cheapest I've seen saddles and the quality is very good. Oh, you can order a fuzzy interior lining but I think that would trap burrs, bugs, etc. They are lined with fabric tho.
