Utah!

Cynthia, sorry about the bad eggs. I have to admit I do NOT like the look of showgirls, so I'm not *as* sad about those. Congrats on your new chicks though. Can't wait to see them.

Snowshoez, I have no idea about the bugs. I'm really creeped out by your description though.

Blujems, I'm so sorry that none of your eggs hatched. That would be so heartbreaking. Did they die just before hatch? Do you know they're DEAD dead, or maybe just late?

Lisa, love that blue and yellow baby. So adorable! It bears a striking resemblance to my BCM/Lav Am chick that I have. You'll have to notice it tomorrow. Wow!!!! Gorgeous olive egg! Congratulations!!!

Red, yes, I definitely go and hang out with my chickens. Some days more than others, and if it's been a stressful day, I'm more likely to go out there. It's kind of soothing to me (until they get in the garden....)

Donna, sorry about having to cull that chick. It sounds like you definitely did the kind thing. Congrats on all of your pips! My last batch of BLRW hatched right on time. I'm hoping my new batch hatches during school hours, and by the end of day 22 would be awesome (day 22 is a Friday, and I'd be a wreck at the idea of unhatched chicks in the incubator at the school over the weekend).

Sphinx-my BLRW from Donna hatched on Day 20 too. Early would be good for you! Hopefully the same will happen. She said hers have all been early.

Cindy--that really is rotten about those button quail! :hugs Hope it works out better the next go around. On the bright side, I got our order in today and you have a beautiful blue wheaten ameraucana---2 months ish old coming on May 5. And a little Marans roo this weekend....Maybe that will cheer you up a little? What do you think happened--any idea? poor babies!

Donna--sad baby news. :hugs
Thanks for collecting those eggs. Look forward to seeing your herd Fri night. Hope the rest do well. So funny you are hatching today too :) I have only gotten three out, 1 more halfway out, another Wheaten, so two of each. The first one looks splash actually it has a spot on its head. But they are so light, and it does have some orange around the shoulders, so it is hard to tell.

No more pips. Nada. Crossing fingers there will be more...maybe because they are so darn big they will take their time?

Sphinx-- I'd look for them to start hatching on day 20--every single one of my BLRW's have started then and finished up by the end of day 21. Temp in the incubator is spot on, and shipped eggs have hatched later than that, so I think it is just something about these little guys--or maybe that they are fresh rather than shipped? Dunno, but I should definitely think they will be totally done by the end of day 22 for sure.

Sphinx, your garden comment made me laugh.

GUESS WHAT I GOOOOOOTTTTT!!!!!

Yup That is it!!! LaVerne did it. Gave me a good one

Shirley's are actually getting darker brown with big brown speckles---not like that weird white spot that I posted last week. They are getting better than I thought they would be. But this one from Laverne is much more like it

Red--Stevie! I bet they are getting big. My lone splash is getting huge. Her feathers are curling outward too, wierd! I will have to post a pic. Looks kinda crazy but I like it.

Yaaaay!

Good girl! Yes, they're getting big, Stevie especially. Angel's feathers aren't doing much of the curling, now, but I'm thinking her coloration is going to be gorgeous. She's got a lot more white coming in under the black. Pretty girl.

To everyone who's had losses with eggs and chicks recently -

So sorry. It's hard.

I have 8 babies. Two are working on getting strong, as I had to help them out. I am pretty sure they will do ok, because they are screaming..and that's always better than them just laying there, not making any noises.

Wendy, I was the same way about the showgirls, but I looked them up and kept looking at them..they grew on me, especially the ones with the bowties..they don't look as naked necked. We'll see if I keep any.

Still no word from "that guy". So, I will just sell my babies. I'll see what I can sell around here by word of mouth, then, off to ksl. Mostly blues, and they are fluffy babies. One is quite light..have to wonder what color of splash that will be, I am thinking it might actually be a white splash. Is there such a think in the Pure Ameraucanas? I'll have to go look. It already looks mostly white, but with yellow on the sides and underneath it's belly. Pretty babies.

Okay Lisa, just got back from Duchesne and we have 22 eggs for you.

The broody up there hasn't hatched her eggs yet, but she is hissing at anything that comes near her. I put a feed container with chick feed in it right where she could reach and caught her stretching her neck to get at it some, so at least she can eat without having to get up off her nest. Hopefully hers will start hatching this weekend.

In the meantime, I have 2 pips in the incubator, over a day early (as usual for the BLRW's!). I think they will likely hatch tonight while I am at work, then the others will start popping out like popcorn. After that, my incubator will be EMPTY for the first time since I got it (my son just read that and made a shocked noise!) I have so many chicks and juveniles here that I have to wait until the new coop is finished and some of them moved up to Duchesne before I can hatch any more! Sad, but true. Look at me, being all practical--how did THAT happen??

We had to cull one of the BLRW chicks this afternoon. Pulled it out of the brooder last night because it appeared to have some kind of injury that threw it's balance off badly. Couldn't see anything on it, but it was definitely a neuro kind of injury. I believe it might have gotten stampeded by the other chicks.

In any case, by this morning, it had fought so hard trying to get back on it's feet that it had caught a talon in it's neck and ripped the neck open. No saving that, I'm afraid. Poor little critter. Blood all over it's brooder from the laceration. Very sad--it was a very pretty blue, too.

Everyone else looks healthy and happy and the boys cleaned the brooder room this afternoon. The Cream legbars are very perky and waiting for their ride home tomorrow night.

Eep! I missed the part of this post that said you had to cull a chick. :( I'm so sorry, Donna. I'm not looking forward to that part of being a chicken owner. I still have to decide what my preferred method of culling the chick will be. They all sound very unpleasant.
I'm really happy everyone else is doing well! Those are the little stinkers that make all this work/worrying/obsessing worth the effort, hey?

Funny little story from my house tonight... :)
I flip a mug upside down and put yogurt on it. (It is the only thing that I have found to keep the chicks OFF of so they don't get their feet in the yogurt.) So I give yogurt to my 3 week old banty cochin frizzles and decided to put my banty EE pullet in with the frizzles. (When I have everybody outside on a nice day, I set up the dog exercise pens right next to each other so they can see each other and somewhat socialize, but the teens have never been able to actually touch the babies.)
ANYWAY, I put the EE girl in with the frizzles and she starts dipping her beak into the yogurt and then suddenly FREEZES. Like, dead still! She realized she was in the same brooder as the frizzles. For the longest time, she didn't move a muscle. I think she was scared to death of the frizzles! It was the funniest thing, I swear! My daughter and I were pretending to speak for the EE. "If I hold REALLY STILL, maybe they won't see me!" Ha ha!

She started to move after a little while, and became comfortable with them. One by one, I put the other teens in with the frizzles to see their reaction. The Wyandottes (LF) didn't mind sharing yogurt with the little bits at all. When I put the EE roo in, he did the same thing as the EE pullet and FROZE. Maybe it's an EE thing? Hilarious, either way.

It is so funny how they react to each other isn't it? I have also seen them freeze up like that....it makes me take a breath, because I am terrified of what they are about to do, chickens just turn on a dime sometimes....it is such a great surprise when they just take a moment and then carry on with no ambush. I am so surprised at how different each personality is. They really are so interesting to watch. I feel sorry for people who do not get to know what fun chicken keeping really is. They are missing out on so much joy :)

Whooaaaaa wait a minute. I missed this---Cynthia and Sphinx you are talking about showgirls? Cynthia are you trying to hatch some? What are those---and what are bowties?? My curiousity is up on this :) I have seen naked neck turkens.....not sure if that has anthing to do with these.

Sheesh I had to go back and read, I missed some stuff on here....

Cindy---you have goats coming next week ? Those babies are so fun! I hope you can share some pics with us. I swear my DH is going to get one, he loves them! I think I have a secret crush on them too but if this happens it will have to be his idea. Then he can be the one feeding and watering :)
