Utah!

Well, I was just telling Cynthia this, thought I would post here too....I am actually starting to think it might be the ACV I gave them yesterday morning....I put lots more than I usually do in, and it was the kind with the mother, It just kind of came out too fast and I thought, well, if they don't drink it i will switch it. Well, they did not drink much....but they all looked weird last night and then I noticed this "sneezing" and nonsense. Well today, all the eggs are so so much lighter...7 chickens laid eggs that were closer to white than colored. My GSL laid one that was super light, hers are always reddish brown and today it was cream colored, 3 of my blue/green layers looked really white, and then my olive layer that is always really dark came out this really pastel whitish green. hmmmmmm coincidence? I am wondering if the vinegar did it. I gave them regular water, and they seem to be doing a lot better, maybe I got them drunk or something lol. I will cross fingers and see what happens. The sneezing is better...my Elvis keeps hiccuping, and one Marans has been making funky noises, but the rest have settled down. So weird huh! Has anybody ever had this happen before? They will not eat their fodder from yesterday either, I threw it out a few minutes ago, maybe it was a bad batch? Something weird is going on i am just not sure what it is. Will have to see if the color is better on their eggs tomorrow. My marans that usually lays speckled dark, just laid one that was plain light tan with a little dark patch on the very tip. It can't be coincidence that all their eggs are coming out weird today can it?

what does the acv do for them? i have heard of people mixing in the water but have never talked to someone who did.

Madchicken, it is like a tonic that keeps their digestive tract happy, feathers nice, less illness, I have heard about lots of health benefits. I believe it helps with worms, I use cayenne for that though, chickens have no heat receptors so you can put cayenne in their food once a month or so and no worms. You can read a lot about ACV on the old timer thread, or there are seperate threads on here. I think a lot of people use it. The ACV with the "Mother" is the Braggs or heinz unpasteurized, and you can make your own by adding some of that to the regular stuff, and leaving it in a dark place with the lid cracked for a few days. Then the regular stuff has the "mother" and you can just keep it going. I usually use a few tablespoons per five gallons, yesterday I used about half a bottle ( a few cups probably) in 1 1/2-2 gallons though lol woops. I did not know too much could be a bad thing....

Michelle, if you get on here, do you think the fodder could have done it? I think the seeds fermented a little in this batch before I sprouted, and they were a little smelly. No mold or white fuzz though. But I purposely feed the fermented feed and grains all the time and they have always been fine. I am leaning toward thinking it is the ACV overdose, but I am going to hold off on giving them fodder for a few days just to let them get back to normal.

I don't think that the fodder would do it. My girls lay larger eggs when they get fodder and I've never had eggs that got pale like that. Hmmmm........really strange thing with all your eggs getting light. Maybe they didn't drink enough water because of the concentrated ACV? I agree with your plan, though. Get them back on track with plain pellets/water for a few days. They might have a ph imbalance. That's all that comes to mind.

I received my Polish hatching eggs yesterday so they will be going into my other incubator.

Those are going to be Christmas chicks, huh?

Diana, themadchicken, pictures for you. Only one of Cotton..little stink. lol...

Here is the frizzle boy Diana. Love that coloring!

Told you..gorgeous! Going to be very handsome all grown up.

And here's Cotton, oh, if you could only "hear" pictures. She was growling at me. :)
I had taken her out while I was getting pictures of the Frizzle. While I tried to catch
him, she came running over with those wings spread out just a cussin me. Wow,
going to be very protective. I can pick my blue splash up, she puffs up when I go
near her, but she doesn't make the sound that Cotton makes. I get a kick out of her.
LOL I don't know why, but the slikies eyes get the feathers around
them sticky when they go broody. I had to trim my blue Splashs's, and I think I will
trim Cotton..they keep there eyes closed alot while sitting. Maybe that's why. Let
me know themadchicken, I won't if you don'twant me to. Will watch for a post today.
If nothing, by tonight, I will trim just a bit.

He is beautiful.

We did one decrow today and good news, the experimental chicken survived the surgery. Since it was first time not sure if it worked or not. When I left the chicken was in a cage awake and recovering. We'll see what he sounds like tomorrow. It is a black Copper Maran and will be for sale after we see if the surgery was a success. it took a long time to get him prepped and just in the correct position. I was surprised, It was very bloodless, I expected there to be more blood, Also the surgery was not in the neck as expected but below in the upper chest, It's a matter of punching holes in the airsacs in the chest. Then stitching up the incision correctly so that air does not get out under the skin, If that happens they swell like a bullfrog and that is a no no. I'll keep everyone posted.

Lisa, my chickens are all doing an excellent imitation of drowned rats. I don't know why they're insisting on being outside when the weather is so wet. My poor polish chickens look the most bedraggled, that's for sure.

Cynthia, that boy is looking gorgeous. He's the sizzle you got from Sundance, right? I wish mine had made it.

GaryDean, I'm just going to go ahead and pretend that I didn't see your post about the legbars because I really really don't want chicks in the house this winter.

Welcome, An-nyoung. I need more roosters like I need a hole in the head. Sorry!

Hattie, good luck with your hatch. I hope all of your little polish hatch.

Sundance, I'm glad Warren survived the surgery. I can't wait to hear if it worked or not. He seemed to really crow a lot for me, so hopefully tomorrow you'll have an idea. Yay science!
