Utah!

Ok, went back and read... CUTE goat!!! and CUTE ducklings!! Someday I'll have some of each.. just not this year....

Nothing on my eggs yet, but I set them late, so I wasn't really expecting anything until toniteish anyway... but I still had kind of been hoping for some early hatchers... not to happen, oh well!!

Wow! That's a job well done! I voted for you! You are ahead!!!

well my little Cotton only hatched one egg. I took the other egg from her tonight. I was going to get a picture but its only 45 degrees inside the coop so all you would have seen is a little head looking out from under her wing. It was 80 during the day and the little chick was up and playing. I forgot how fast chicks grow.

Cotton has a baby, I hope she is being a good mama. :)

Welcome, UtahFalcon!! You're just going to love having chickens; it's so fun. My first set of chicks came from a feed store, and I had a great experience with them. One of my best layers now is a speckled sussex that was an impulse buy when I went to pick up feed. You'll get some more interesting breeds if you buy from other chicken keepers, but they probably won't be sexed, which is sometimes a dealbreaker.  I know that technically you are only supposed to have 6 hens in Draper unless you're on an agricultural lot. I doubt you could get away with a rooster, but I suspect there's several people in this group who are in cities with similar laws who have more than 6.  A lot of it will depend on if you have neighbors who you are feuding with. If you are on good terms with all of your neighbors, odds are extremely good that you'll never get "caught" having more than the limit of hens.

MadChicken, is today hatch day? I'm so excited! I've only had one chicken ever go broody, and she was a terrible layer who got killed by a racoon about 6 weeks after her chicks hatched, so she never did lay again. However, I owned her over a year, and only got a dozen or so eggs out of her, so she's not a good example to use.

Bird-Man, any idea how to train my chickens how to catch mice? Mine have always acted like they don't exist.
sorry i forgot to answer you sphinx. my girls are just mousers naturally. but if i had to teach them i would pin a mouse down and show them, maybe get their interest in it, show them the tail and maybe they will think its a worm and go after that. chickens will naturally eat whatever does not eat them first so its just getting them to know its food. chickens will also eat birds too.

I guess my chickens are just dumb. I have seen an occasional mouse in the yard and they just ignor it. I also have little quail that they share the coop with. The only problem I had was with the roosters trying to breed the quail and chuckers
