Welcome, UtahFalcon!! You're just going to love having chickens; it's so fun. My first set of chicks came from a feed store, and I had a great experience with them. One of my best layers now is a speckled sussex that was an impulse buy when I went to pick up feed. You'll get some more interesting breeds if you buy from other chicken keepers, but they probably won't be sexed, which is sometimes a dealbreaker. I know that technically you are only supposed to have 6 hens in Draper unless you're on an agricultural lot. I doubt you could get away with a rooster, but I suspect there's several people in this group who are in cities with similar laws who have more than 6. A lot of it will depend on if you have neighbors who you are feuding with. If you are on good terms with all of your neighbors, odds are extremely good that you'll never get "caught" having more than the limit of hens.
MadChicken, is today hatch day? I'm so excited! I've only had one chicken ever go broody, and she was a terrible layer who got killed by a racoon about 6 weeks after her chicks hatched, so she never did lay again. However, I owned her over a year, and only got a dozen or so eggs out of her, so she's not a good example to use.
Bird-Man, any idea how to train my chickens how to catch mice? Mine have always acted like they don't exist.
