Utah!

On the houdan thread, there are two lines (both are out of reach here). One was started from Cackle Hatchery stock (the U of Arkansas) and the other was started from McMurray stock (located in Canada). The Canadian birds have the better mottling and have won awards there. I have been thinking about ordering some from both places. Other hatcheries are dismissed on that thread. McMurray had some issues with hardiness and cross beaks a while back, but not sure if that is the case any more (the comment I saw was from 2+ years ago). Definitely let me know how your chicks turn out. Since I am ordering meaties, I will be able to meet the minimums for shipping them. I really can't tell you how excited I was to see your post!

I ordered Houdans from Mc Murrey to be delivered Feb 4

-25 TheBirdGuy? UGHHHHHHH!

I just went out to give my girls a treat. One of my eggs was split. I took it inside, and within 10 minutes, I can't find the split anymore, and I can't remember which egg was split. So, I could be getting an unpleasant surprise as it thaws. LOL My poor frizzle chick's water was totally frozen. I am so glad that I actually grabbed the bottle instead of just eyeballing it and being happy it was still mostly full. I keep the light shining down on it, but I guess that wasn't enough with this cold weather. I'm thinking I'm going to put her with the general population at night. I hope they are nice to her and let her cuddle. She's been out there a good long time, but separate from them. She is still sooooo tiny.

My golden laced wyandotte is holding her right wing funny; I am afraid she injured it. I have no idea how, or what to do. I'm hoping it heals up on its' own.

Cynthia, that little nankin is so cute! Hope her friends hatch soon.

Cyndiloohoo, the problem is, most people don't have their birds separated out into breeding pens right now. I know several great breeders, but most of them just mix everyone together in the wintertime. http://utahwarmblood.com/ has black copper marans, light sussex, coronation sussex, and ameraucanas, but she usually doesn't have hatching eggs available til March. There's also a guy named Steve down in Utah county that has beautiful BCM. Last time I talked to him though, he refused to sell hatching eggs because the hatch rate on BCM is kind of rough, and he got sick of dissatisfied customers. I personally have a black copper marans pair, a cream legbar pair, and a lavender ameraucana hen, but they're all mixed together right now, so the baby daddy is up in the air.

Sundance, that black copper marans cockerel is sure turning into a gorgeous bird. He's kind of a jerk though- he wouldn't share his part of the apple with the hens. Kept running away with it. He's also fighting a bit with my legbar rooster. Legbar rooster's comb is a bit beat up, but the BCM looks fine. Did the surgery bird end up getting eaten?

We have't done anything with Warren. He is living in the treatment room in Carolyns clinic crowing hos head off. We are going to try to decrow again, Its funny when hes crowing and the patients owners in the waiting room all look around. The receptionist. just says we treat all kinds of animals. someone gave her a silkie rooster the other day. We are going to decrow him as well. Can;t wait until your legbars hatch

I have both ameraucana and FBCM...unfortunately everyone has pretty much stopped laying right now. I am only getting maybe 2 eggs a week. Hopefully they start laying again soon.

I thought we were bad at -10 this morning when I went out and fed.
My 3 little chickies are doing good. I gotta try and get better pics of them.

and just cause I like torturing Lisa.

...She won't stay in the tote now so I had to resort to diapers. luckily I have quite a supply from family and friends.

I showed Hubby the goat picture. He said no I can't have one. I sometimes will let my male cats loose in the house with diapers on. That way id they spray it goes in the diaper. FYI I may be going to Orem tomorrow if anyone can get the chicken from Logan to slc. Depends on what the Dr says. I was badly bitten by a cat last night and a Drs appr at 500pm wrist is swollen huge and I can;t bend it.

Thank you so much for the responses and for helping me understand.

Blujems- if it is okay, could I contact you when I get close to that time and see if they have picked up? I would have to avoid letting my boys see your goats though, no way they could resist!

Thanks again for all the info. :)

Blujems, love the diaper pic. She is just the sweetest thing ever. !

Will your DH be working tomorrow? I cannot get out to your house just yet, been home with a sick kid and getting my other one ready to leave town, been crazy here. If he works and could drop that bator off after that would be awesome! If not, I will try to come out over the weekend if we get back in time :) I can see a few marans eggs that quit on me..I think I have 5 of the 9 left. They are dark and hard to see in, but I can now tell they are not quite as full as the others. So far all of the cuckoos eggs are swimming around, and the 3 Ameraucana eggs look good. I cannot see in Sparkles 2 eggs at all. But they are rolling to the side, so they seem to have a growing chick inside....or did at one time, i hope they are still going. I set the new cuckoo eggstoo, not sure if they are still fertile, but I had 6 to set. She Did not start laying until the 24 but then laid several in a row.

Our therm on the coop said -16 this morning, outside at 6 am. Goodness. I do have the heat lamp inside, but one of my polish is not doing so well, she is standing on one foot under that lamp and wont budge. Her crest gets wet in the waterer, and keeps freezing, I bring her in and dry it up, then when she goes back out same thing. I hope I can get her through the next day or two, then hopefully the improved temps will help. I worry, she is just a little thing. Hope everybody's chickens are doing ok in the cold! Sphinx, hope your girls injuries are minor and she perks up!

Do any of you guys want my rooster? I need to get rid of him before he starts crowing. He's super sweet and is going to be gorgeous. He was born in mid May, so he's almost a year old. He's super sweet and likes being carried. He's going to be a beautiful HUGE rooster. I don't want to use KSL because I'm scared somebody will use him for meat. He's really sweet and has been raised by my Buff Orpington since he hatched under her. He's free to anyone who wants him.

I will send it to work with him....

Hector, that is one pretty boy! Yes, he had a wyondotte, but not any more..dogs got her.

I just had my large egg hatch from the same guy I got those eggs for Hectors broody. This baby that just hatched is black, with a white spot on the head. I'm trying to think if he still has a barred rock hen. I know that when he got that rooster, it was supposed to be a barred rock pullet..but there is no barring on him what so ever. So, white? hmmm, Will get pictures when they all hatch. If they all hatch. Three left to go, but no pips on those. Tomorrow is the due date anyway. Little Nankin is scared of the big black baby. :D
