So sorry. Sounds like you could both use some love and support right now. Wish I was there to give you the hug in person.

Sundance, yikes! That's some scary stuff! The cat wouldn't have had Herpes, right?

Lisa, okay, I'll stop with the rooster thing.............right after I post this video

All cats have some form of Herpes. They also have a really bad bacteria in their mouths that causes this bad sort of infection. my wrist is the size of a baseball and the line is going up my arm, Had another shot in my A-- ouch have to have another one tomorrow plus taking two other antibiotics. Maybe Lisa can get a rooster when we get the decrowed rooster . Couldn't do the procedure today because I was not able to assist maybe next week if my wrist gets better., She has three roosters at the clinic waiting

So, hubby will be going to Twin Falls ID jan 14 and 15 if any chickens would like to hitch a ride up or down, let me know. They would need a box for transportation, but are otherwise welcome for the ride. I said Idaho Falls before, turns out there are more than one falls in Idaho.

Here's a good news picture. I had three of the 5 that went into lock down hatch. I think that black Australorp is doing his job. The two that didn't make it, were red, Probably from the RIR roo that got killed by two hound dogs. He lost a lot of chickens that day. Including some Nankins. If this baby I have is a roo, he may want it.
My other RIR's, the pure, go into lock down tomorrow. 6 went into lock down out of 10. Just candled, had a quitter tonight to throw out. Here's my babies for now. Going to get a close up of the last one..it's so cute with it's white chest. DH says it looks like a penguin.

You can see which one hatched this morning, still a bit wet. Not fluffed up. Going to
post a picture of it up close. Too cute. I know the white will probably go away as they
grow older, so they will be black sex links? Not sure, Australorp, with red sex links. ?
Here's Happy Feet.. :))

Happy Feet? Look at the size of those..hmm...big boy? I will feather check tomorrow. On all of them. He/she is sweet. Just sat there looking around. From side to side. Wondering what was up!

Red, love that rooster! He seems very sweet. Just the kind of guy I would need around my girls out there if I could have one.

Sundance, I was bitten by a cat years ago..back in the 80's. They don't take that too lightly, especially when you do swell up like that and have that red line..right? I am glad they are staying on top of it. They almost hospitalized me, but I said I would be good and take the meds. I hope that starts going down real soon! Hoping to hear good news in the morning, that it is down a bit, or a lot!

Birdman, how are your chickens doing in this cold? I know several people that are losing their chickens. One gal, mostly young pullets. She has lights out there, but not heat lamps. I know you don't use anything for warmth. Do they just cuddle up together in the coop? Are you getting eggs? Have to share a picture of an egg I got from my red sex link a few days ago. Crazy!

She's back to laying normal, just this one egg. Soft shell too. I have oyster shell out
there, free choice. Spinach treats. Egg treats. Boss treats. Not sure why she did
this one. Makes for an interesting picture though.

Cynthia, I love that egg. It looks like when someone gives you helium-filled balloons, and one gets forgotten in the closet for about a month

I think sometimes they must just lay weirdo eggs. And if those babies are sex-linked, I'm going to guess that the black ones are girls. I have wondered before if the BSL I got for my mom had a different daddy than a BR. She has white speckles all over her.

Actually there is Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, Post Falls, American Falls plus a Cascade and lots of cities with Rivers, Springs & Lakes in their names.. Not to mention Paris and Moscow...

my girls are doing great, even the ones that are nude from molting. i am getting eggs still. some cuddle up, others sleep alone. it stays fairly warm in my coop with the coldest being 20f. no frozen eggs ether. i collect about once a day when i tuck them in. when i put my hand to the window of the coop i can just feel the heat come off the coop. i can see it too. i will never go back to heating my coop. my girls just do not need it. :)

Cynthia so sorry about Miss Piggy. Any idea what was wrong with her?

She was a beautiful chicken. I love your new babies. I can't wait to see what you think of Nankins. I am curious about that breed.
Sundance your arm sure doesn't sound good. That is scary stuff. I'm really hoping by tomorrow you will turn the corner and the infection will leave your system.

Sorry for all the cold weather you guys are experiencing. It has been cold here too in the low 20's. I'm looking forward to it warming up.

birdman...man, no need for heat if your coop stays in the 20's. What's your secret?! I am even doing the deep litter this winter. It's pretty easy for sure. With the cold, there is no smell. We just clean some out once a week, leave some, then put some new on top. Seems to be ok for the hens.

hattie, Nankins, I've had them before. I didn't keep them. Different times. Here is a picture of one of them. She was sooo sweet. She would jump up onto that post when I knelt down in front of it, so she could look at my face. Didn't mind me having her on my arm. They make the cutest little sound. If this is a girl, I may keep her..if a roo, the guy I got her/him from may take it back. He had a dog attack, lost a lot of birds.

Not full grown here. But, almost.

Actually, as I look close here, this is a different one from the first picture. They liked the
attention. lol..
