Utah!

Hattie, are you putting chicks under your broodies? Mine never go broody when I want them to. Only when it is extremely inconvenient!
I would love too and I have been thinking about doing it now that it has warmed up here again. I'm pretty protective of these little ones. They had a slow start so I want to make sure they are ready for the great outdoors.

Sphinx hope that medicine is helping you out. Ear infections hurt so bad.

It seem like the medicine kicks in within 24 hours and relieves the pain though. Glad your closing went well and

on your great hatch!

Cynthia I'm so glad Richard is home with you and he is getting better!

Daloorashens I love your little broody picture. They are so fun to watch. You will be glad you brought them in.

Lilwanis fun hearing your news. We will all keep our fingers and toes crossed for you.

Sundance yay on your hatch!!! It sounds like everything is going great. Hope your little sermas start pipping soon. What color are they?

I am so excited, I have two Seramas hatched. They are a day early. They are very tiny compared to the other chicks. I have them in a different incubator. Pictures later. They aren't dry yet so dpn't have a clue about color

Cant wait to see your babies Sundance!

Hattie, love the avatar, those babies really are adorable.

Sphinx, I hope your ear feels better soon. I do not know why it is, but when I use Vic's vaporub under my nose, it helps my ears feel better if I get an ear infection. Weird, but for me it works, you could try it?

My last showgirl that I kept, the one I am feeling more and more sure is a girl, is picking on all the others. Stinker. If she does not stop she is going to be replaced. She is acting way mean since her buddies left. I have tried separating her but then she yells and yells and does not want to be alone.

My Polish that got bit by my dog, is healing up nicely (the wound part) but she cannot hardly walk at all. I really hate to spend a ton of money doing the vet, so I have tried to splint her leg a bit, but i do not know if she will heal properly. I hope we do not have to put her down, I hate that part of chicken keeping! Crossing fingers she will do better with a little time. She does not seem to be hurting, but when she tried to walk she scoots on her belly/wing on one side and uses one leg sort of on the other side. That does not sound good does it? Poor thing.

Cynthia, how is Richard? I hope he is settling in and doing ok! Hey, your friend Brandi wrote to me today :) She said she has Tolbunt Frizzled Polish eggs coming to hatch-- I asked her if she gets any smooth babies to let me know I really like those and have not ordered eggs to hatch yet. I was pretty excited after I talked to her ;)

Sorry about your polish. I have a RIR hen that got beat up really bad by my 2 BO. During the beating her leg was broke or dislocated. She was our favorite hen so we decided to not put her down. This was last fall, i might have put a post on here about it. She is doing great. She still cant walk on her left leg and uses it as a crutch but seems to get around OK other then that. Everyone says i should put her down cause she is probably in a lot of pain. She still lays 4-5 eggs a week so the way i figure it she cant be in to much pain and distressed or she wouldn't be giving me eggs, right? she did do the belly thing for a bit but doesn't do it any more. I did separate her from the rest off the flock. I use her for the new hens to become adjusted to the flock. She has been with Ratchet our splash silkie rooster that i plan on breeding with the Cotton the little white hen i got from Cynthia.

Does anyone know when to separate the chicks from the hen? Its been about 4 weeks and the chicks dint sleep under mama anymore and mama has become somewhat tolerant towards the chicks. She will try to eat any treat i give them first, only to call to them after she gets a couple bites. She has also started to do the egg squat again. The chicks are about 75 percent feathered. I do have a coop and a run that is open as of now but even with a light it will be cold at night, at least 30 degrees. Mama and chicks are used to 70 degrees constant.

Oh Lilwanis.... hope that job opportunity works out for you, how awesome that would be for you!!

Yay on all the hatching!!

Cynthia, glad your son is home

SPhinx, sorry you have been sick, it has been rampant this winter!!

The eggs from my birds go into lockdown next Tuesday (as in 3 days)... looks like I have 3 or 4 still good, it was sooo cold when we collected, some days the eggs were all frozen, even when checking twice a day, so I wasn't surprised that some of them were probably shocked by the cold and didnt' develop... hoping it starts warming up more and I will set some more eggs... poor birds, this cold is terrible!!!

Gary, turn the heat down on your chickens and chicks! They need to get used to it being cooler. I still have three of my RIR's that I will be keeping to watch, and I just put a 40 watt bulb in for them. I go from a 100, because I have a pretty good sized bin, to 75, then, 60, then, 40..then none. I will have them outside soon. When that weather gets up to the 30's..when! Sounds like the chicks could very well be on their own. Mom needs to eat more if she's going to start laying again. Oh I'm such a know it all! Can't help myself..no really, anyone else? Think the mom needs to be alone so she can eat?

Lisa, I know about Brandi! She called me, and wanted me to take her bator, and hatch those eggs for her. When I heard what they were, I told her that you were wanting some, but not frizzle. I am wondering if she will do it or not. I know she has some chicks coming, I think in March..hmm..maybe next month. She wanted me to go in 28 dollars on these Polish eggs..her and a friend. They must be expensive, but I told her that I don't want any. :/ She's so funny. I just love that girl. She's become like another daughter. She comes by often. Her kids call me grandma, and when they are talking about me to her at home, they call me the chicken grandma. She calls me the chicken mom. :) She is expecting. Hoping for a girl, has two boys.
Hey, did you see what Gary wrote about his BO? She walks around with a bum leg. Took a while, but she got up off of her belly. Hope she comes around for you. Are you still mad at your dog? I bet he's gotten some belly rubs by now. I can't see Lisa holding a grudge. Not even towards a dog. :)
Richard seems to be doing well! He has his appetite back. That's a good thing. Now maybe he can gain some weight back. He has a follow up with his PCP on Tues. He will probably do some blood work to see how those white blood cells are looking.

Dalooras, he's at our home, but not his. I think he's getting ancy to get to his home. Maybe Tues. Will see what the doc says. Going up and down the stairs for me is a tough one.

Sundance, pictures?

My chicks are still hatching. I haven't kept count. I have most of them in an aquarium in my living room. I have Black Copper Marans, Auracana, and some backyard mixes that my hens laid. as well as seramas. Just two of those so far and I;m keeping them. Lots of little fluffy buts.
Tell your friend Brandi that I would love a Frizzle tolbert.

I did a count of the chicks that have hatched. I think the hatching is done but I'm going to leave the eggs in for a few more days, What I have so far
16 black copper maran chicks. I will be selling most of these so let me know if anyone here wants them before I put then om KSL
7 Auracanas not for sale at this time.
4 barnyard mixes easter eggers with olive rooster or black sex link crossed with Olive egger rooster For sale
2 Seramas. I was really disappointed by this as I had 16 eggs. I have more eggs in the bator and have ordered more eggs. Not for sale at this time. \
I will post pictures later
I am amazed at the black copper maran hatch I had 20 eggs. last year I couldn't get any to hatch.

Wow, congrats Sundance. That is a good hatch with the BCM's. Ok, so those barnyard mixes, are going to lay olive eggs? Man!

I just ordered some chicks yesterday..egg layers. Gold Sex links, Rhode Island Whites, and a couple of their leghorns. I shouldn't have to bring anything home from IFA or Cal Ranch. Unless, I see a real pretty white NN.

And oh, my barred rock eggs..nothing. So the guy is sending some out on Tues. since Mon. is a holiday. He's been in and out of the hospital for his knee, and then gets that flu real bad. He's been good to write back to me. So, hopefully they won't be 5 days out again. That sure doesn't work with shipped eggs. If I get some to hatch, I will be ready in having my mid summer layers starting, along with the babies on the way. Should get them this Fri.

I hope you get more of your Seramas hatch. And, I can't wait to see your Auracanas! Did you get any double tufted with the rumpless? Those are hard to come by. And, hard to hatch, you got 7!
