What will ya'll be hatching this spring? I'd really like a Marans (or another dark egg layer, I already have a Welsummer)) and an Ameraucana/Legbar (or any likely blue egg layer). I'm hoping that one of my hens will go broody this spring and do the chick raising for me.

I'm glad I live in Eagle Mountain, we rarely get as much snow as everywhere else. Most times it will snow even just over the mountain in Saratoga Springs (or in the Ranches if anyone is familiar with EM) but nothing out here in city center. It's lovely! LOL

I went out to feed my girls this afternoon and there were all these little tiny birds all over in my completely enclosed run! They go through the chicken wire...what the heck? I have never seen one before in there, and there were 20 or so. I went in and they were in such a hurry to get out, they were cramming themselves through the holes to get out, it was really strange.....they were picking at the birdseed scratch I had put down.

Tiny? Little birds? I thought sparrows were small, but they can fit through that chicken wire. I have this trouble all winter. They pratacaly hit me in the face trying to get out when I go in..and..while it was real cold..they were sleeping in the coop! Most stay in the neighbors tree right close to the fence where the coop is. Drives me up the wall. Even my chickens will chase them off. With their wings spread, head down, they will chase them off. I've tried the sparrow trap to no avail. When I go into the coop with fresh food, the sparrows start calling each other..serious!

I rarely have a problem with the little birds stealing feed, but I only feed my flock twice a day and don't leave any sitting in a container for the girls to eat from. Most of my chickens are pretty territorial when wild birds show up - except for the quail - and will run across the yard to chase them off. I think it helps that I have turkeys out there, too. If everyone is truly full and there's still a little bit of grain on the ground, I don't mind if the small birds get it. I love that they are here. I know my BF has had quite a problem with them stealing feed at his place, though.

Interesting. Many of the chicks I bring home stay quiet while I'm driving, at least for some of the time. I wonder if it's because I talk to them?

We just got back from Duchesne-- what a freaking nightmare that was! Car got stuck twice up there. I had to dig it out once, then had to spend an enormous amount of time trying to rock it out when it slid backwards and one of the tires went into a small ravine. My kids we totally terrified the whole time. We had planned to stay the night up there, but the heater in the cabin refused to work and it was snowing like crazy. I was pretty much in tears by the time we got out of there. I did discover that my front tires are pretty much bald, so I'll be getting those replaced Monday. You'd think I would be smart enough to have noticed that before, but evidently not.

The chickens are all fine, except for one thing: someone has stolen 8 of my Legbar hens and Asher's little Americauna. There were 4 wheeler tracks right up to the coop, so I'm thinking they just decided to help themselves. None of the BLRWs were missing from the other pens. We've brought down the remaining 3 Legbar hens as well as 2 of the splash BLRWs. None of the Roos were missing, so I guess whoever took them just wanted their own supply of free eggs. Jerks. I could padlock the pens, but then I would have to worry about them taking wire cutters to the hardware cloth on the runs.

I've had chickens disappear, too, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were stolen. I hope you find whoever it is that took your hens! Legbars are not exactly a common breed in these parts, and they obviously had some knowledge of chickens. Ooooh, that makes me hopping mad! Grrrr

Sphinx, my son's call should be here in the next 2 1/2 weeks I expect. He is right now off feeding his cows too!
He has some Scottish Highlanders that are now at Wheeler farm. His hay is in Taylorsville.....treacherous drive today to feed!
When he gets back he will get a BIG kick out of your green cow pictures

I love the scottish highlanders. They have such character. Most people on the list don't know that my husband is a scottish laird and we have land in Scotland. We go over there occasionally, The highlanders aren't as popular as they once were but its a treat to see them in the fields. The farmer that rents our land in scotland keeps a few,

Kimmy, assuming my Icelandics are laying come springtime, I'll be doing a test batch of their eggs to see how they turn out. If all goes well, I'll be able to get eggs and chicks to a few who were wanting some, including Cynthia and Lisa

Cynthia has first dibs on a pullet, if I remember right, and Lisa has dibs on some eggs.

Hattie, glad to hear that your little Polish is doing better. That's kind of what my BO was doing, which is why she now has an apartment in the garage. And yaaay for the sweet broody mama and her new baby! That made me go, "Awww!"

Birdman, your EE sounds like a sweet girl. And your BO. It made me smile when you mentioned how poofy your SPR is. My blue Wyandotte is super fluffy like that. I just love the big girls.

Cynthia, how fun to see picture from Austin! How wonderful for him to be out there. That picture with the trees is just lovely. I love fog.

Lisa, sorry that Frisco is having a hard time of it

Poor dear. I worry about that happening with my Icelandic boys, which is why they're confined to the garage until they're all healed up.

Okay, now for my report. I've got pretty much good news this time around, which is a nice change. I've been able to see my BF a couple of times this week, though we've been really careful with things. It's so nice to see him. I still haven't figured out what's going on with the shaved cockerel. Next time I'm out there, I'm going to grab him and check him for bugs, then feed him some protein (the chicken, not my BF

) And, we got word on the court stuff the other day. The court date has been set for March 20. I guess the judge told my BF's lawyer that he's just going to forego the pre-trial, which is super incredibly awesome. Now I hope that the court date stays on the 20th.

Our chickens love having a heat lamp in their coop. They love it so much, in fact, that I've been getting bombarded with eggs! Today, I sat down and cataloged what I'm getting to see who's laying. I now have a reference chart for future use. Check it out:

My BO is doing better. She's acting happier and has started grooming herself again, and she's even given me a couple of eggs. Sweet Peachy.

I can't believe you guys are getting that kind of wind and snow!  Nothing here like that, but it did just start snowing lightly..well, it's a light icy thing going on.  I'm thinking we may wake up to some snow.  Unless..it is moving north. 

Sundance, the pictures that Lisa showed of her wire, is exactly how I do mine.  It's so easy to put a light on top of it.

Brad, I'm so glad the chicks I got to you are nice girls.  I know it's mostly because of how you treat them.  They know they are loved.  I'm glad you got them, you take good care of them.   I think we all know when we trade or buy from someone on this thread, that our birds are well taken care of, and if it's time for one to move on, we make sure they go to a good home.  I love us guys! And gals!   lol   

Sphinx, are those cows on your land or somewhere else?  They got big!  Of course.   Green monsters.   The will be back to normal soon, either by them cleaning each other off..or your snow!

cyndi!   Oh, soo waiting to see where your young man goes.  You should find out soon.  You all will be watching that mail box like we were, then out of the blue, we get a phone call from the P.O.!  They say, it looks like we have a LDS calling here, would you like us to keep it here so you can pick it up, or bring it?  We decided to have them bring it, since we had watched that mail box so long!  It was so fun watching/listening, for the mailman that day!  Austin opened it, and we all hugged and cried, and laughed.  Talked, then next thing, he was on the phone for about an hr. telling people he got his call and where it was.  Fun Day!

Gary, you aren't far from us, and as I finish this post..it's windy now!  Blowing that icy stuff around pretty good..man, that moved in fast. 

well you got them started right cynthia. i know i got other girls that were just now sweet because they were not loved like you love these girls. so i give half the credit to you. and yeah i love fluffy girls. sphinx thank you for the update on your cows. great pictures too!

Yeah that olive egg was quite a surprise. I believe the pullet came from an olive egg, but I had figured that her genes would be diluted enough that she'd just lay brown. When I found that egg, I thought, "Aw man, this one's so dirty." Then I washed it and found that the green stayed on

I kind of feel bad, too, because I got her from Cynthia, and I know Cynthia's been wanting an olive egger.

And that blue one from my Ameraucana is huge! Little Miss Over-achiever out there.........

My mom is a nut for Scottish stuff. We have ancestry from there, mostly from Anderson. That is so cool that you guys have land there and get to go and visit! Scotland looks like a pretty place.
