Utah!

I got some close up pics of the AMeraucana/cuckoo Maran Mix...It looks like it is getting some Reddish Brown Barring going on. Very interesting.

Do you feed it to them free choice in a dish, or spread it around..?

I spread mine around. Giving more now, since I got that straw! I need to get some calcium out there. One of my girls eggs was broken yesterday. Could tell it was a thin shell. The Australorp went in the same nest box with her to lay her first egg..probably plopped on top of hers. The shell was thin when I cracked it open. The Australorps wasn't. Nice 2 yolker, and I had to chuck it. Going to start cooking up the eggs for the dogs today. At least they will be used. I was reading more about how some don't wait, I just have until Sat. Close enough I am not worried about the dogs eating them. :) She laid a pretty light brown. Finally, something different than the dark brown ones..they are dark red brown. Pretty, but now I have three of them. The blue egg I got from my Wheaten yesterday was beautiful! The most blue she has laid yet..and into the garbage it went. Well, it stayed on the counter for a while for me to look at.

they say you should offer it free choice. so i have one of those 3lb plastic feeders hanging up next to the one i offer oyster shell in. they take it as they need it and that way i know they could get it if they need it. throwing it on the ground you end up wasting a lot of it and they may not be able to find it. so to me it just makes sense to offer it out of a dish. :)

I've been trying to do some catching up on here and it has taken awhile! Sundance I LOVE LOVE LOVE your Serama's! I would love to have some of that breed. I candled the eggs you gave me and none were fertile.

Maybe your little rooster is doing his job now though. I am done with incubating for a while maybe when you have chicks I can buy some from you.

Sasha I'm so excited you are hatching and all the breeds I love.

If you have sand in your run do you still need grit? I read if they forage around in the dirt or have sand they don't need it. I don't give any to mine but maybe I should?

Well one more day of lockdown for me and I should have chicks. Only three are incubating still out of six. Fingers crossed.

I'm not going down to SL for at least a week, or I'd offer to help with the chicken transport. I normally go down on Saturdays, but this saturday I'm picking up girl scout cookies and then my kids have two different birthday parties to go to.

So, here's two of my chicks from my legbar/black copper marans hatch. Five of the chicks looked exactly like the one on the right, and two looked like the one on the left. Do you think it's a sexlink cross? It kind of looks that way to me!

Another view with a better shot at the left one's face:

Are we talking rocks here..or the oyster shell? I spread the rocks, and put the oyster shell in a bowl. I don't want to wast the either! They really do go after that oyster shell if they need it. Interesting.

You too? Again? We will be close. Sat. and Sun. lock down for me. I'm excited to see if Red's green egg will hatch. I sooo need to see that one hatch, so I know which one is Red's! I will be up all night if that one is pipped along with another at the same time! I think I will know the two blue/green ones. They should look a lot different.

Asked the gal that I got the OE and Marans eggs from what the hens were. She said they were Birch Marans? Black with gold around the neck. Bet those babies will be black.
