Utah!

2 of the Welsummers hatched--Joel is very happy! I had to help one of them out of the hell this morning--just a little bit stuck, and both of their eggs appeared pretty gooey inside, but they are up stumbling around in the incubator, so all is well. I'm waiting on the Cream Legbars and the 2 Wyandottes now. Pretty much have given up on the other 3 Welsummers. One of the Cream Legbars has a decent sized hole going, so I'm hoping it zips by the time I go to work.

We had a scare this morning. I was getting ready for work and my mom says, "An animal control truck just drove by slowly with its lights on. It said West Valley on the side."

This was NOT helping anything, so I went out and locked the garage before leaving. I figured that if some neighbor was a jerk and called AC on me to get my chickens taken away, they weren't going to be getting into the garage and disturbing my broody. Right before I left, my mom said, "I saw it again. It wasn't animal control - it was just public works."

Oh no, that would be scary!! So glad it wasn't.

Out of a dozen eggs, none hatched. This was a first hatch for me. Bator spiked to 104 last week, which appears to have done the job. I am glad they weren't more developed and then killed when the bator went to 109 the night of lockdown. I am excited to go to Logan and get some living chicks.

Just candled my eggs under my broody. only two look good, the other three are clear. My two RIR eggs didn't turn out. Maybe my rooster isn't big enough for the job, after all he is a bantam and KFC is the biggest hen in my flock. But I'm pretty sure i have opened eggs from her and seen some good bulls eyes.

I will be letting the mamas introduce their chicks to the flock this weekend. I really need to start breeding Ratchet and Cotton, my pretty little silkies. Was thinking about adding a frizzle silkie to the mix but not to sure. Does anyone know how they are about being broody. I just got rid of a broody and not sure if i want to replace her with another broody.

No, I got a chick, just a little chick I didn't think I would buy from there. I thought about buying Serama eggs, but saw these there. Now, I am hoping that is what this little one is? I am pretty sure these bantams were straight run. Took a chance because the wings are so out there. Soo small! There were Silkie bantams, and cochin bantams. I almost got a cochin bantam, but decided this little one will do fine with my little bantam Faverolle. She will be in with her.

The silkies and the cochin bantams were huge next to her.

I am guessing these guys are probably around 5 days apart in age from her. There is
Reds' baby on the left. My miracle baby on the right of her, the black is an OE I kept
and now think it's looking like a boy, and an EE that reminds me of my very first EE I
had.

One more..she likes being under the bigger chicks.

Aww Lilwanis, I am so sorry! Sometimes those things stick I swear. That really is the dumps. I will be excited to see you and your happy face when you get chicks. Brandi's already went to her...so you won't have hitchhikers as far as I know, unless anybody else wants what I have left....there are 3 snowballs and 3 WCB Polish left. I was lucky to sell all the others pretty fast, and the ones I hatched day before yesterday. I wish the 3 turkens had not escaped though, I had more people wanting them darn it.

Sad news for me too.... My son called me while I was uptown and said one of the two "sparkles" chicks died. (Sparkles is an EE of Blujems, that is super sweet, and we want to get babies from here because she keeps threatening to be done laying). UGH! I came home, and the lighter one was flat as a pancake, the others were sitting on it. I had this happen last year with a Polish baby. The brooder is not crowded at all, I have 2 brooders, one with my chicks in it (6 chicks) and one with the remaining 'sold' chicks in it (10 chicks), so I do not know why they did that. I was sad to lose it, I really thought of the two that one would be the girl. I kind of wonder if the heat lamp was down a little close and she got too warm...they were all sitting outside the warm circle when i got home so I hoisted it up a little, the kids turned the heat up in the house when I left and I think that was enough to warm that brooder up a little higher than it should be. The rest look fine now, I just want to go back in time and bring her back though. I am pretty bummed about it. I just know the other one will be a boy. It really sucks to get the darn eggs to hatch, the babies to eat and drink, then you think you are all set...then this happens :barnie

Blujems, I really hope Sparkles lays more eggs! Oh, and if you will save two marans from your next hatch, I have a guy that said he did want them for sure.

Ok, then the brighter note...Cal ranch had EE's tonight that were gorgeous. Lavender and light blue colored ones, some with a little tan or rust coloring,,with giant fat muffs and beards. I did not get any, although I oogled over them for half an hour, but if any body in Cache Valley is looking for something cute, there ya go.. they were not the normal chipmunky ones. They only had a few but they were really fluffy and sweet.
