Cyndiloo, I tried once and killed it, but I know it likes shade and softer ground, so something with sand or peat moss or something mixed in to break it up. And lots of water, just like onions. Other than that, just watch out for the thieving gophers and it's not too hard, I would think.

Hey all! Donny of you hatchery vaccinate your chicks for mareks?? Any thoughts on this? Heard of anyone with an outbreak? If I order, I need to do so soon...so expensive! A thousand doses for less than twelve chicks at a time.

Does anyone have experience growing garlic? I want to grow my own but I'm wondering what the result would be if I started it now? 
Do I have to wait until fall?

i have not grown it yet but i plan to plant a ton in the spring. the garlic from the store that you buy to eat works well. a lot of my family grows it and i have done a lot of reading on it. its okay to plant in the spring. its a companion plant to tomatoes so i am planting a ton around my tomato plants. so yeah its new for me but not totally new. if you grow it let me know how it does

Hi Sphinx!! My flock... Presently I have about 60 chickens: the basics like Buff Orps, Black Australorps, Golden Laced Wyandottes and Hybrid Americaunas, but also have purebred Americaunas, Delawares, Barred Hollands, Welsummers and my newest, Cream Legbars. Think that's all the chickens...lol. I also have 15 guineas and 4 peafowl. That's the flock!!

Lilwanis, not sure if you meant at the hatchery? I got mine vaccinated for both Cocci and Mareks. Mareks is not something you want to mess around with. I have heard that if they are vaccinated NOT to give them medicated feed, it can counteract with the immunizations...I have never bought the immunizations and given them to my own chicks.

Cyndi, I grow garlic! My favorite is Spanish Roja, and the Romanian...the German is nice also. To me, the "hardnecks " have better flavor than the soft, the hardnecks are the ones with the really stiff stem coming out the middle. Yes you can plant it now, it is similar to setting onions. It is just harder to find the starts, the fall starts are nice because the garlic has grown and you divide the cloves with the little green starts coming out the tops, set them in the fall and they come right in during the Spring. If you are going to do it, do it soon though. They like to get going in the cool, and frost won't hurt them at that stage.

I am so mad right now. I went and got some baby vitamins for my Icee chick, Vona. Gave her a drop diluted with water, and then I found lice on her head. I picked as many off as I could and smushed them, then gave her a little oil bath. she wasn't very happy with me, but I think it will help. Had to be really careful. I wonder if that's why she's struggling? Poor baby. Mama and babies are now in a new carrier with fresh bedding, and I'm going to commit insecticide on that first carrier tomorrow.

Thank you La Casa de Pollo!!! I started with just wanting chickens for eggs, but then got intrigued with the different breeds..lol. Now have tons of eggs but love the flock!!! Converting an old shed to a 'chicken care facility' for incubators and brooders. Already have the brooders and incubator but now waiting for the finished space. LOL... then I'll end up with even more. Presently building separate runs to keep my breeds apart, so that I can keep my chicks and eggs pure. So excited to get started with the new chicks!!!

My husband thinks I'm nuts... not like I don't have anything else to do...lol. Have Cashmere goats which are multiplying quickly, an apiary and working to get a performance horse facility on our 12 acres. Busy, busy, busy!!
