Utah!

So she is a different hen today....Clucking for the first time since coming here. Moving around and loving the goat milk and bread (plus Jessi's leftover cereal this morning) I think she is feeling better today.

So I am thinking she has not been eating. I have a message into the old owner to see what she was eating before. I don't think she will eat the pellets we have, at least not yet.

I am so glad she is doing well

I swear, I am almost in tears for you. Try try again as they say. You are learning. Don't quit.
I should get a picture of your baby that I hatched, is she icelandic..not pure, but does she have EE in her too? Can't remember. She is going to be a very interesting color. I am excited to see her grown up. She has a lot of blue, and, a lot of brown/red.

blu..your hen looks great..very pretty girl!

Does anyone have experience growing garlic? I want to grow my own but I'm wondering what the result would be if I started it now?
Do I have to wait until fall?
You may have gotten your answer already...I grow garlic all year long. The first year I started I planted it in the spring...it was a later start so when I started to harvest in the fall the bulbs were smaller than I wanted so I left the rest in the ground and harvested the next fall...whooo that was a lot of garlic.

Now I plant spring and fall, if you plant in spring wait until the tops die off in fall and turn yellow then you can dig them up let them dry in the sun for a day or two, then you can braid the tops or store however works for you. :) I actually break my bulbs apart in the fall and replant one bulb, a big fat healthy bulb and leave it over winter...my garlic has been sprouting for three or more weeks already-that stuff is crazy!

Good luck!

Since everyone is talking about gardening (which I love, love, love!) I will share my little seed starting secret-it kind of goes hand in hand with loving chickens

I break the eggs at the pointy top really carefully when using them (as close to the top as possible-to leave you a big fat seedling pot), poke a small hole in the bottom make sure to break the air sack in the bottom so it can drain well, and plant my seeds in them. The egg shells planters produce the most healthy seedlings. Then when it is time to plant, squeeze the shells and stick them in the ground shell and all....the Broccoli loves the extra calcium-so I even smash up more shells when I transplant them into the garden! We just planted a few seeds today...loving this weather!

Lluvia, that is so awesome! I'm totally going to try that!

I think I may get one of the small greenhouses that Cal Ranch has. I'd really like to grow some salad greens where the chickens won't get into them. Or many bugs. Ew.

Red, I'm sorry about your Icee chick. That is a dismal rate. I hope next one goes better.

Blujems, I'm glad that silkie is perking up so much!

I was planning to go to Chickenstock, and then I remembered that I signed up to do a 50 mile bike ride on 5/4. Oh well.

LluviaChick, I've seen that before with the eggshells, but never done it. Since I've been so slow to get my seedlings started, I think I'll try and do that this year.

Desert, good luck with your hatches. I hope you have a great rate.

I have a hatch going in a preschool right now. They are 8 days in. I'm picking up the incubator tomorrow and carefully moving it back home because I won't have access to the school over spring break, so that's 9 days I couldn't add water. Not acceptable.

Love the egg planter idea! Have to try that for sure.

Red, I named her Amy. Since you like the meaning of names, I looked it up. It says that this name is an Old French name. Beloved. Awww
