Utah!

Casa, i have heard that cat nip makes a calming tea, i even had the recipe somewhere but I've never been able to try it.when is the right time to start seeds? I'm as new to gardening as i am to chickens.

Ok, time for a chick update:

Hatched a couple of Cream Legbars as well as ordering some of the 2013 line from Greenfire. I think I have about 8 of those chicks running about now, all girls. Greenfire sent some others as packing peanuts--they look like maybe a Sussex of some kind and a couple of Marans of some flavor. I'll be getting rid of those, since I don't really have space for them. Wish I could post pictures of them, but it doesn't seem like I ever have time (at middle child's piano lesson right now).

Hatched out a few Isbars and also ordered some from a breeder-- out of 14 shipped chicks, 7 were DOA. Looked like they got smoothed by the others. The breeder appears pretty reputable and is willing to back the chicks, but we are giving the others a couple of more days to make sure they are okay. They are all on quarantine for a couple of weeks to prevent any repeat of the Great Plague of 2012.

Also hatched out 6 or 8 of my BLRWs--cute little buggers. 2 beautiful Splash by lovely Blue shadings and the rest are Blues and Blacks. I have a heap more of those in the 'bator.

And the best news: out of a dozen of Bargain's Welsummer eggs that went into lockdown, ALL of them hatched! Joel is uber excited that he finally got his babies. I still have a ton of Welsummer eggs in the 'bator, but that's okay.

So we are now swimming in chicks and I have lots more in the bator. I also have another dozen Isbar eggs on the way. Why? Heck if I know. Clearly, I need Chickens Anonymous. Only problem is that I don't have time for the meetings! :)

Check it out..the Robins think it's Spring..they are here. :) I caught this Robin in the top
of our Cherry Tree yesterday..ahh, blue sky.

Catnip? Whoa! That is interesting. Especially for it to be CALMING lol.

Here is what I do for timing--
Last week of march---Cold hardy stuff can go out now-you can plant directly outside now onion sets, garlic, cabbage, brocc, caulif, snap peas, lettuce, spinach.

Mid April--started plants listed above are ok to put outside in the garden if they have been hardened off

Now--end of April --start seeds indoors for warm weather plants, tomatoes, peppers, squash, eggplant, zucchini, pumpkins, etc. I start the squash and pumpkins end of April because they grow so fast they get overgrown easily

Last week in May--I usually put everything else in this week. Sometimes Mid may if the forecast looks good, but I rarely have to cover for frost if I wait til the end of May. All my starts, my seeds like beans and carrots, I get my starts Mother's Day weekend that I do not have started myself, to get the best selection, then they spend a couple of weeks on my patio tables in the sun, easy to cover and water, then all goes in the dirt that last week in May. (Covered with a little layer of shavings/poop from my girls to get them started :) )

Donna, that is great the Welsummers did so well! Yay!

I get the whole swimming in chicks thing--my 12 teens are in the garage, then the 6 for my neighbors, and I have 42 eggs due next week , and 45 on my table resting to go in the bator tonight or tomorrow. :) it is going to be so fun. Oh! Guess what? I got some olive egger eggs from a marans mama and an Isbar daddy :) Just a few, but fun. She sent a couple BLRW too, 3 eggs I think--then some Barnevelder, BCM, Blue Marans, , Wheaten Marans, cuckoo marans, Ameraucana (blue ones, yay!), SBEL, EE. Now I just have to try not to keep any--I was planning on raising them a week or two and having all the fun then selling them at chickenstock :)

Blu, did you get your Wheaten marans eggs? Were they as dark as the picture?

No not yet...On the waiting list, only 8 people ahead of me. I hope they come sooner rather than later.

Having so much fun with all of the gardening talk! My biggest tomato producer is Big beef. I always grow Early girl also for the flavor as well as the heirlooms and cherry chocolates & sun sugars. Although the sun sugar never make it into the house. My 17 yr old is like a rabbit in my garden, now I want to try that "big girl" one that was mentioned- was that the name? I'll have to go back and read again.

corvidae- yay for your Welsummers!!! What is bargain?

Picture overload!

Had fun taking pictures today..since I told Red I would get some of her girl.

red's girl...icelandic/EE mix. Very pretty girl so far..

Girl, Makes Me Happy! :p

This is the Welsummer that has been teasing me. She was 5 months on the 18th.
Guess she will be one to take a while to get really started.

Sphinx was right..: it's a boy..this is my little Miracle baby. Guess I won't be keeping
him after all. :(

Little stink!

The blue OE I kept..

Lisa, remember that light blue in the OE's that I kept. Here HE is. Boy, I called that
one wrong!

Here is my latest Miss Piggy that sundance surprised me with. I love her! She will
jump onto my leg every time I kneel down. She will let me pet her back like you would
a dog. Not too many chickens will let you do that.

And here is one of the sweetest faces you will ever see in a Bantam. My Bantam
Faverolle. Isn't she sweet? My Japanese is going in with her. She also jumps up on
my knee. She's on it here.

Cynthia those little OEs I got from you are showing no red whatsoever although one of them has less feathering and almost no tail yet. I'm thinking that AT LEAST 2 of them are girls! You did a great job choosing for me! Thank you
