AWKWARD MOMENT OF THE DAY

soooo I went to lunch with my neighbor friend. The conversation turns to chickens. She tells me how cute my chickens are. Then this:

"i am sooo glad you do not have roosters, I hate the neighbors that do that, they are so rude! I had a neighbor with a rooster once after I had surgery and that thing would wake me up every morning at 5 am and I just wanted to bawl. I could never live like that again, I HATED those people, they were so inconsiderate. You are such a good neighbor, I love our neighborhood, I hope I don't EVER have to live by people like that again."

NO I did not tell her about my boy out there. Obviously she has not heard him yet....now I feel really dirty and mean lol I have a feeling I might have to decide between a good friend and a sweet little roo in the making....

HAHA! That iiiiis awkward!!! By the way, my buddy Jordan said he loved coming out to get those couple chicks! Thanks for helping him out. I'm not sure if you know, but he ended up getting a few barred rocks and easter eggers as well! They're all doing good and are getting along great!

That is awesome, he seemed like a really nice guy, genuinely interested in the birds
Glad he got some more...I had told him I had more hatching but now not so much

She is so cute! Do you just love her death? I hope she is a good girl. My two have been very good so far, i think I might get another couple next Spring, I want to see how they lay first.

Extremely friendly and not timid at all. If I put my hand in the brooder it runs right over. I am still a little afraid of it being a boy but no comb yet at what...about 7 weeks?

They were hatched 3/1 and I received them 3/4 so 6 weeks tomorrow. No pink on either of mine--One thing I have been watching for, if they are like the polish, the head feathers on females stay wide on the tips, paddle-like shaped, the boys start to get stringy and really pointy on the ends, usually by 8 weeks I can tell on the Polish, maybe these will be similar. Have not seen stringy feathers yet, but the one I posted pics of are a little wider than my other one. When they start to turn pink it is up on top of the beak. almost under the nose feathers, so you can kind of push them back a bit and see a little red starting under there when it starts.. Crossies that won't happen! I am getting quite attached to mine. They are really good sized too, that surprised me, I thought they would be polish sized but I looked back at the info and it says they are a good size LF, one of mine is a little pig and getting really fat. My polish babies born the same day are way smaller. And so skittish. I think that is what I really like about these, the fun crests without all the goofy polish like behaviour

These are sounding good Lisa. Do they lay a pretty good sized egg then? Since they are LF size? I will have to see how yours do. I might have to have a fun bird out there that lays well. Most of the fun ones either lay small, or not so often. But, speaking of fun and often, my Sweet Pea, the Favorelle, lays almost every day! I can't believe this, and I assumed she would have gone broody by now, because my Silkies did. I hope she doesn't go broody real often, she is perfect for me. I just love that little stink. So friendly too. Houdan, will have to read up on them.

I candled my eggs. There WERE a lot in there. You know what I am going to say right?

Soooooo many are duds. So many. i took out 32 eggs. Yes. There are hardly any left in there to hatch. So all those fun Marans and all those other fun breeds.?? nevermind. Just nevermind. There are 8 eggs in one bator and 6 in another. And some of those look iffy at best. There are maybe 4 I could see moving total. And most of the ones that are doing good are not the breeds I wanted to keep. Poo.

Most of the chickens I have to keep were from the chick order I got (7) , my hatches of the breeds I really really wanted have been mostly a bust. So if I figure out what it cost me to get the 4 hatched chicks I am keeping, it is a ridiculous amount per chicken...oh it is not good at all.!
I am so bummed out right now. I wish I would not have looked at those eggs, it was way too depressing

I think I should stick to chick orders next year. Even with all the mistaken roosters they sent me the cost per chicken makes more sense.

I have had similar luck with hatching so far. Out of almost four dozen eggs that I have set so far, I now have eight chicks to show for it. Sad

With the Marans that just hatched, I am happy, but disappointed. At least some hatched, but out of 14 eggs, 13 went to lockdown. That means that seven chicks died between lockdown and now. I did get five though. My goal was for at least seven to hatch, so that is a bummer too. None of my Houdan eggs hatched and that is a huge disappointment. Their aircells were so bad, I didn't have much hope from the beginning.

Houdan are known to be slow starters. There are some on the swap thread and the Houdan thread that are talking about 11 month olds that are just starting or haven't started yet. It may be a while before you know what kind of layer they are, lol.
