The saga continues...... My MIL called this morning and told us their neighbor saw Porter (our LGD) in Moms field (right next to ours) and he was hurt... I figured since he had figured out a way through the ditch under the fence yesterday afternoon that he had just gotten past our upgraded barrier and had a scratch from the barb wire running under the fence... Well when I got out there, he was no where to be seen so I fixed the ditch blockage and went back to the barn.. I see this white over by the ducks behind the fallen tree and as I get closer I see that it is Porter and he is not moving.. When I got to him, he raised his head but didn't move.. Long story short... we got him to the vet and while there is no bullet or fragments in him, his lung is punctured and there is a perfectly round hole on his right side behind his shoulder along his rib cage.. So no surgery.. the xray did show fluid in his lung and an air pocket in the body cavity.. vet said there was no current air leakage and no evidence of current bleeding.. so he is to rest for a week, penicillin shots etc..

I called the sheriff because of our previous dealing with the crazy neighbor but even though he agrees Porter was probably shot, there is no proof.. I hate to think the neighbor shot him but don't know what else it could be... It is exactly in the location of a "kill shot" for those that hunt... I think we got lucky and they used a 22 from a long enough distance that while the bullet penetrated but took his thick long fur in with it and when Porter moved his fur pulled the bullet out..

He should be fine.. the "incident" is on record and we will hope for the best...

Hey everyone, I was told to come visit the Utah Board.

My name is Karen and I live in Cedar Hills. We are new chicken parents. We rescued our first one's out of a trash can at the local gas station, and then added a few more. Not sure what some of them are since we got them from a Preschool, but the ones that I do know are 2 Barred Rocks, 2 RIR, and 2 EE, and then have 4 mystery babies. I do know we have 1 Roo in the bunch, so I will probably have to find him a new home, I'm sure I can't keep him here in Cedar Hills.

Karen, it's so nice to "meet" you! I'm incredibly scandalized that someone threw living creatures in the garbage, especially cute little chicks.

Sundance, your field trip sounds like it was a lot of fun. Make sure you rest up and take care of yourself.

Sundance, so glad you got to go there on such a nice day! Fun that you got to also see my son's cows. The red momma is due anytime. You barely missed Joel too. He and a couple of the other FFA boys spent the day buying hay in Cache Valley and would've been there unloading it just after you left.

Thanks everyone! I really think they might have known they were all Roo's and they dumped them, they were around 2 weeks old. The original 4 "trash can" chicks I've already re-home 3 of them, just one lonely girl left, at least she is a pullet right now, just feel bad she is by herself, but not for too long. Then I got the mystery baby's and another BR from the Preschool lady that was handing them out at the store, and I know 1 of those is a Roo, and I'm really sad about it too. But my one neighbor told me to keep him, he loves Roos, so maybe if no one says anything I might be able to keep him. And I know that there are at least 2 maybe 3 Roos close, I hear them every morning.

But when I knew we were only keeping 1 of the first 4, I decided to get 2 EE and 2 RIR, but when I was waiting for them to come in, I ended up taking in the Preschool chicks too (I felt bad for them outside in the cold), so Right now I have 10 babies, and was only planning on 5-6, so I might be needing to re-home a few, but I might have 4 Bantams (I know one of the mystery's chicks are a Bantam, it hasn't grown since I got it), and they really don't count as full size chickens, at least that is what I keep telling myself. lol

I would love to know what they are either way. I will post pics of the mystery's if you guys want.

And is anyone else in Cedar Hills?

Finally picked up the bantam RIR from Sundance and her 4 chicks. Got to meet Red..Sorry about the quick high and by Red but after ten hours of work and a box full of chickens, i was done for the night, but Sundance is hatching some silkies for me and I'm pretty sure you need one.

Beautiful bantam Sundance. My little rooster will be very impressed. Here is a picture of her in a bucket with her chicks. Maybe she will decide to sleep in the coop latter but for know she seems happy and warm.

Pan, I agree with the others. That's just how Leghorns are. Mine can be catty. If I can handle her, it's on her terms. She's a free spirit. I have found, though, that sometimes when I am sitting outside with them and she comes close enough to me, I just give her a gentle little pet, but don't try to grab her. This has helped her calm down when around me, because she knows I'm not always going to try and hold her when she's close. The first Leghorn I had, Cindy, was very unique to the breed. She would follow you around the yard and delighted in being picked up and told hello, after which she would happily go about her business. And I'm so glad you are taking care of Ruby! She looks pretty rough, but she has a personality made of gold.

I got to see Sundance and her hubby for a bit tonight. I finally got to see her Seramas, and OH MY are they beautiful! I got a kick out of one of the little hens that was setting on some eggs. Miss Attitude!

And I ended up taking her Barnevelder, Lacey, home to live with me at the preserve. She is a very sweet hen. I've got her out in the coop now with everyone else, sans the Icelandics. I think a couple of my girls have already decided that she's okay, but it seems to go more smoothly if new members get put in the coop when it's dark, then wake up with everybody else. I think she will be okay, Sundance. She ate some scratch and grass just fine.

My turkey has reached a new level of broody. I went out with my flashlight tonight to check her eggs, found only one (lousy magpies) and saw it was infertile. Anyway, mommy was not happy with me. Not only did I get the normal rearing, biting and hissing, but she actually got up off the nest and flared up, gave me some jump kicks, and tried to chase me away. I really have no doubt that she'd be a good mother with babies under her. Birdguy, I'm hoping you have small poults at Chickenstock. I'd love to stick one or two under her and see if she'll take them.

And, Birdguy, I am sorry to hear about Porter. Sounds to me like your neighbor deserves a pants full of buckshot........ Fine neighbor, indeed

She is so cute. She looks a bit pale, did she just hatch the babies? Give her some scrambled eggs for a couple of days. Sitting and being broody for so long can take it out of them. How many babies..maybe you can get a photo of her with them tomorrow..I love mama baby photos.

No chicken train? Sasha, I'm falling in love with the brown one. I may have to keep that little one.

The black one is really looking like a girl. Not sure if you were wanting a girl, or boy, or if it mattered. But she is pretty tiny and fast! Can't believe how fast the little ones can be. I will keep her until we can get her to you. Even if it takes a while, and you can just have her, because of me being a little stinker and deciding on keeping the brown one. I just can't stop looking at her/him. These two tiny tots sound like little squeak toys!
