Easter Chick Update! These are two of my favorite. One is the Wheaten Marans and the other is the Marans x Wheatens Olive Egger. I'm really hoping they are both hens! Any confirmations?

Hello all, I am new to this forum but I've had an acct w/BYC for about 3 years now!!!! Lets see... we live in Lehi and have been trying to establish a good flock but everything that can go wrong has =( Our first try with a few chickens and 2 turkys ended up food for an agressive dog we had to put down b/c he started to bite ppl. Last yea 2 years agowas so far our best year. We got thembig enough to get eggs from them but in Oct of that year we made a trip out to Cali and while we were there our new next door neighbor's dog ate almost our entire flock!!!!! Last year we tried again but me andthe hubby where going through some stuff and had to rehome them to our across-the-street neighbor so we did still get to see themgrow up. Well we dcided to try again this year wedecided to keep it small just 5 chicks. Well 5 ended up being 9 lo. We got them pretty early in March and had them out in the coop by last weekend. They did great they where happy they where growing and getting beautiful. Then a racoon got to them and left us with 4 =( Or at least we think it was a racoon since we didnt see any bodies the chicks where just missing and there where feathers every where!!! I was so mad!!! Well we go toThanksgiving Farm today and they had chicks for sale and free roosters. We got 5 new chicks and one free rooster that where about the age of our original chicks so we put them with our chicks. They kept their distance from each other since our coop is pretty big. We fixed thefaults in our coop to keep the racoon out but it was all for not =( we kept going out there to check thembut the last time we went out there was only 2 chicks left!!!!!!!! I am livid!!!!!! Only one chick from our original heard is alive and one new chick we got today a cochin. We have 6 other baby chicks in our garage under a heat lamp untill they are old enough to go outso we put the remaining 2 chicks in there in another container untill we can trap the racoon. Uh!!!!! I am still sooooooooo mad!!!!!! Imsorry about the essay I just needed to get this off my chest. We will also be reinforcing our coop so our babies can live!!!

Also we are looking for a Turken roo if anyone is looking to sell or rehome. We are hopeing for a really young one to grow up with our young chicks since the free roo wegot today was one of our casualties ='( Thanks for reading my book I hope everyone had a great weekend!!!!

Wow!! What a bad time you've had!!!

My coops are all like Fort Knox!! All the places I've lived, some even in the extreme wilderness have been ultra fortified. I've only lost two hens to predators (and a few to my son's dog when he was visiting, which resulted in a very tearful time for my son) and it must've been weasels since the ONLY hole that could be squeezed through, was only big enough to accommodate a mouse or small weasel.

Many, many years ago I lost some to a starving stray dog, with young puppies following her. Poor thing!!! And that same year to an old crippled fox. But since then NOPE!!

Just my opinion, of course

.... but maybe you want to find/catch/remove the predator BEFORE attempting more poultry. It would be happier and less stressful for you and healthier for the poultry.

ATTENTION my chicken friends! My house is off-limits for the next week or so, and with the exception of putting myself through a stringent deep cleaning to go to Chickenstock next week, I will not be visiting anyone, either. One of my broodies has a terrible respiratory thing going on. It almost sounds like asthma, in a weird way. I don't want this spreading to anyone else's birds. I've started giving her very mild amounts of infant vitamins in her water, along with a tiny pinch of electrolytes, so we'll see if she improves in that time.

UGH!!! So sorry RED!!! My neighbor is going through the same thing right now!!! We had our young flock merged in my brooders and they started up with something. She immediately snared hers and hurried them back to her house, thinking mine were the sick ones, but mine have recovered well.... her sadly, are starting to drop.

I treat and prevent far differently than she does and think it has something to do with the outlasting strength my chicks have shown.

I use the VetRX and so does my neighbor, however I also use antibacterials to my cleaning of trays and EVERYTHING in my chicken shed. That my be the redeeming difference,

I'm going to purchase some Oxine... it sounds like something I need to keep on hand!!

Yes I agree the thing is I still have 8 chicks left and 2 turkey chicks. The hubby is putting out traps today and last night he set up a carcass with poison. He checked it today and it was gone. I'm hoping that it was just the one racoon but it did take 7 chicks 4 that where about 10 weeks old and 4 chicks that where about 4 weeks old. That seems like a lot of food for one racoon but I wouldn't know.

If anyone has any suggestions for us on how to get rid of racoons we would sure appreciate it =)

I had a similar experience a few years back.... I was a newbie chicken owner. None of my chicks survived, many of them were eaten by raccoons. Then I went several years without chickens due to family problems, life drama, bullying, and discouragement. Luckily, I've had more luck this time around.

Ace, I want to say hens because of the tail feathers. When I raised my Brahmas, my males grew in size real fast but took forever to grow tail feathers... But don't trust my judgment... I am still new at this...

I can't wait for Monday, oh my gosh! I can't wait to incubate eggs! <3 Eeep. Need to borrow my teacher's incubator though.

My chicks are old enough to go outside, but my mom won't let me until we get our permit... I'm gonna ask the people in the association about Polish breeders. I really want some Buff Laced chicks... They are soo pretty. :3. But I still want to hatch them with either my EE crosses or my Sizzle crosses.. maybe I will hatch them all at once even, we'll see.

Yesterday, I put my Mozart in with Ruby. It's funny really... My small hens don't like Ruby, but my big fluffy ones don't mind her at all. XD Ruby is still scared of them at first, but things eventually settle down. ^^ Let me say this, I love big fluffy birds! Jealous of anyone with full size Brahmas! D:

I have to re-home a Roo, I'm in Cedar Hills, and according to the online city code it states No Roosters. I'm so very sad to have to let him go, he is going to be beautiful full grown. I love his colors that is coming in now. I figured I would put him up here first, because maybe I will get to see photo's now and then, or at least know he is doing good. If no one wants him I will put him up on KSL.

I have no idea what this little guy is, and I'm really guessing he is actually a Roo, but he has had that huge bright Red Comb since 3 weeks, and starting to get wattles this week. I took him from a lady handing them out at the store, they were hatched for a Preschool. I was told that they all hatched March 25-26th so he is now 5 weeks old. My guess is he is some type of Cochin Mix, but I'm brand new to chickens, so this is just by looking at other people's photo's. I know out of the 4 chicks I took from the lady, one is for sure a Bantam, it hasn't grown at all. He has feathered legs, and his feathers are somewhat crazy, so maybe some Frizzle or something in there. He has been handled everyday since we got him, but this last week, he doesn't really want anything to do with me, not sure if its because he is a Rooster. He has been on Medicated Chick Starter, and he knows how to use a Nipple Watering Bucket, we have one out in the run, and they all have taken too it pretty well. He has been outside during the day for the last few days, and I'm still bringing him in at night. I can keep him for a while if someone can't take him right now.

Sillycmoy, what a studly roo! If you really want to keep it, I would look into talking with to the city about it. At least in my town, the chicken ordinance is the last thing on their list. We tried to get a permit and everything, calling quite frequently, but no one ever came over to check our coop and issue the permit. Oh well! We tried! Maybe if you called or went in, they would be easy to work with...?

My issue is we have a horrible neighbor. The chickens are actually on the other side our house, away from that neighbor, but I know the first sound out of him, animal control will be at my house. He calls the cops on everyone on the block, and there is usually something once a week with him.

Do you have any idea's on what he could be? I thought about just keeping him, and once he's vocal see if anyone says anything. I know there is a few close by to our house now as it is, I hear them every morning.
