Utah!

So I brought them all in.  How warm does it need to be over night for them to say outside all night long?

My six week olds are out :) in a pen in the yard during the day, in a wire cage inside the coop at night with no heat lamp. They have been out for a few days and are are doing fine. I am not letting them out of the cage within the coop for another week or so so that they are quick enough to duck and hide from the big girls. They are all LF--Marans, SBEL, NN. My Polish girls are 9 weeks old though and I am still bringing them in at night, they just shiver and are smaller and I feel they are a bit more fragile. Another week or two for them. I think the low 40's at night are ok for 6+ wk olds if they are in a coop at night and have been adjusted to the cooler temps, and there are a few to snuggle for warmth. Some wait a little longer.

I have some that are a bit younger than that out in my unheated garage and they are doing just fine, but it kind of depends on how hardy the breed is. Most of them are ready to go out to the big coops and they are between 6-9 weeks old. Letting them get a little cold (not TOO cold!) helps them feather out faster. As long as they don't have wind on them, they actually should be okay. Freaks me out the first few nights, though...

Lisa, it sounds like you had a blast! I wish I could make it up there sometime. How fun. And, you don't have to tell me how cute that Red is. She's is a sweetheart! You had to have had a great ride with her along for sure. :)

Well, my OE laid again today, and the egg was a beautiful Olive color today! Perfect!

I have NN's going into lock down tomorrow. 9 of them. Hoping for an all white.

Well the 5 that I have that will be 6 weeks old on Monday, I know one is a Barred Rock, and the other 4 are mysteries. I got them from someone handing them outside of the store. They hatched them out for a preschool, and I got the Barred Rock and then 4 with feathered legs from her. One is I'm guessing a Bantam, hasn't grown, but has way more feathers then all of them combined. 3 of the 5 are fully feathered, but I have one that hardly has any feathers on his back, I'm sure he is a roo, he started getting bright red wattles this week, and I know one of the other feathered feet is a roo too, but I've known that for almost 3 weeks. He has been bright red since 3 weeks old. My guess is they are some kind of Cochin Mix. Then my other 4 girls (crossing all fingers) they are 4 weeks, and are pretty much feathered but their necks. They all have pretty good head feathers coming in. They are 2 EE, and 2 RIR, I got them from SunnyBrooke up in Sandy, and she said they could go outside on May 11t, but knowing me I will keep them in longer. I've actually been putting them all outside once it hits 65, and they love it. I always go out to check on them, and they are never huddled together till it starts to get dark, they go in and out all day long, and even when they are all taking a nap inside, they are all in their own separate area, so I usually just leave them outside all day long.

I have 2 week old chicks outside. No coop, no heat light. The do have moma and are protected from the wind and rain in their little run. I let my flock out of their coops in the morning around 6:10 and ever morning no matter how cold the moma has her little chicks out in the cold and they seem to be just fine. I would put a light out side in the coop at night, maybe a 60 watt around 18" off the floor were they were in a pile. Check them during the night and early morning. Ya i know it means little sleep but it will give you your answer. i went fishing this morning at 5:30 am and when i let the chickens out of their coops it was 38 deg, and the moma and chicks were out running around in their run. They can see because i have a street light above their coop. ( We had a problem with theft around 20 years ago in the block so so the city put a light in our back yard that 4 owners pay for. $2 dollars extra a month. wish all city's would offer this)

so the other day i was in ifa looking at the food storage products and i was shocked but they actually had de! they had two bags, the one on the bottom had a tag for $40 so i took the top bag expecting to pay that much. went to pay and the girl scanned it, said it was only $8, i told her she was wrong, she looked in the computer and said she was right. so i argued with her a bit but was in a hurry so i finally gave in. i am not one to take advantage of people. but i am very happy only paying that much seeing how i am building a run this month and am not made of money. i chalk it up to being good karma :)
