Utah!

Greetings fellow Utahans! I just recently joined and I am looking into having a flock of my own. I doing lots of reading and YouTube watching in preparation for building my coop and getting my chickens. I can't wait! Anyway, I just wanted to say hi. I live in Sandy, close to the draper border.
well hi. And welcome. Its nice to have another newbie on here lol.

Brian, I am so glad that you asked to get that Houdan!

Because Brian wanted her, I had to go get her of curse...  I hadn't held any of the teen age chicks, so I wouldn't have known, that she was crackly and sneezy!!   Years!  It's been years since I've heard that.  What's up with that?  Now, every chick and chicken I own is being treated tonight full strength Denagard, except for mama hen and babies.  I think they are separated enough from all of the chickens that she is fine.   I am going to keep all of the big girls in their run for the next few days.  I will be giving just the preventative dose the next two days, as I checked the rest, and everyone seems fine.  Man, if Brian hadn't come over, I wouldn't have caught this in time.  I'm afraid from the sound of the Houdan, she won't be coming out of it any time soon.  I just don't keep them when they sound like that.  Bleached the crated they were in.  I have all the water bowls full of Denagard, they can't drink anything but that.  Glad I have some plain Yogurt in the fridge.  They are going to need it.  This is so upsetting.  I am thinking that maybe the Houdan isn't such a strong bird.  Lisa has lost one, Brandi has lost one, and now probably me.  I know Lisa that you didn't lose yours to illness, but to picking. I don't know.  I do know that I am going to be out there bright and early to be watching the others every day for the next few days.
Thank you Brian for coming over, sorry I sent you home with nothing.  I couldn't let him take that baby home when I picked it up and heard that noise.  No way.
I'm very glad you caught it. Hopefully it was soon enough. Its ok I left empty handed I'm not worried about that I'm more worried about the chick. Keep me updated on how she does.

I posted her on there too, and I have 2 people saying maybe Roo, 3 people saying Pullet, and then a few saying she could go either way, but the color is too dull, and isn't coming down from the neck through, and everyone said that the stance is Roo, but her comb is not.  So I guess we will just have to wait and see.  I just think she is so beautiful that I will be so sad to have to re-home another chick.

Go to my profile and click the Utah thread pics. Opal, who looks a lot like yours, is a girls. The pics are of her at about thirteen weeks and she has some light rust.

I also lost one of mine.

The Houdans are definitely more delicate from what I have read. They are so quiet and sweet. Hope yours gets better fast Cynthia! That Denegard really seems to do the trick.

I love my Houdans though, I am definitely keeping my rooster and hen, hoping for some babies. Still debating getting one more hen, I keep thinking I should wait til Spring, but Lilwanis has a couple from my same hatch date so it is tempting to get one more girl....the rooster hoots like a pheasant, his crow has been really good so far, hoping he stays mellow. I was wondering what the babies would look like from the Houdan roo over a Silkie or SG hen. Little fluffy muttsies for next Spring maybe>Hmmmm would be funny! I am hoping the Houdans make it through the wiinter ok. Will be using extra TLC with them.

My neighbors coop we were going to get for the SG did not work out, they are keeping it. Anybody have a small coop up for sale that would house 6 LF or 8 Bantam SG sized chickens? We are trying to decide whether or not to build one or buy one used, if we can find just the right one...pretty tired of building lol

The houdan girls are staying for a while. I am indifferent to keeping them. On one hand, they are pretty. On the other, I am running out of space, lol.

If anybody else on here would like the EE's let me know. The boy is going to be gorgeous...I had one like this from Cynthia last year and the white and black (or dark brown) feathering was stunning! This one looks just like it so far. he is a sweet boy too. The female has an orange head with the partridge colored body. It was the second biggest chick in the McMurray batch, hoping she will lay big eggs

In other, wonderful news I am down to one brooder of 14 quail left in the house and one brooder in the garage with 2 wheatens and 2 silkies in it is ALL!!!!! My SG hatch next week, so that will be one more in the house. But this is great, because I had 6 brooders in the garage and 2 in the house 2 weeks ago. Yay!!!! I am feeling freedom today. Just a few waterers to clean out and fill each day WOOOOOHOOOOO!

And even better news. All 11 of the SG eggs that I had shipped to me are still going! 2 look like they are much smaller and are still moving, so I wonder if I will lose those. But I cannot believe every single egg is still going with 5 days left. And Shipped Eggs none the less. Totally unheard of at my house for sure. From NC to Utah......it is my lucky hatch. I have 2 weird air cells, the rest look like they came right from the farm.

And I got a good nights sleep and everything seems right with the world today. Finishing all the flower/garden planting today, cleaning my house, then I am going to kick my feet up and relax tomorrow. Cold- drinks-with-little-umbrellas-in-them, feet-up-on-the-patio-table relaxing. I have scheduled it lol. (I am an ultra hyper type personality, this never happens, my DH says he does not believe I am going to do it). Very very excited to be....just done....with so much!
Congratulations on getting some of your space back, but sounds like not for long....lol.

So my neighbor came over to see the babies, and he said that my favorite EE looks like a Roo.

Please say it isn't so. I actually bought this one as a sexed Pullet at 5 days old. He said with her brown I think he called them Saddle feathers come in on her wings dubs her a Roo. He did tell me to keep him, and that he would not tell on me. Please someone tell me he is so very wrong. She is 8 1/2 Weeks Old. These are photos from last night that I took of them. If needed I can go get some in the direct sunlight.

Karen, I have a hen that looks just like this..... and yes, she's a hen!! Hoping yours is too!!

Many have asked whats going on with my cat. Its been a hard time for me. In my downsizing program I decided to spay my international Winner Supreme Grand Champion Sundancenbare Razzel Dazzel. She has been the best Sphynx Cat in the world for many years and is insured for $100.000.00 I decided to spay her and she is not a most cherished family pet and companion.. Its caused quite an uproar in the Cat breeding community that I made that decision but in the longrun that is whats best for me and her. On another note. My broody won't accept my chick. Can anyone brood it for me until its a bit older?

I think what you do for yourself and your pet companion should be your business, although I do understand the uproar part too. I raised teacup Yorkies decades ago, and caused the same uproar when I spayed my female whose daughter had won World Grand Champion.

Sorry I can't help with the brooding part.... my chicks go into a brooder since of my two brood hens, one keeps forgetting which nest she should be sitting on, and the other has started laying again. Besides I may be too far away.

Yes I have bred Sphynx for almost 20 years. Most of my kittens went overseas to Russia China Japan Italy etc. My kittens start at $2500.00 and went up to $10.000.00 But I needed to retire. Razzel made me so much money over the years and I told her she would always be with me. I had her spayed on the QT because of all the pressure I've been getting. Razzel is one in a million.

She is happy now and since shes spayed she can go and do what she wants.

Absolutely beautiful!!!

Hello all
frow.gif
!!

So, after all the trouble everyone is having with shipped eggs.... I couldn't resist the challenge
roll.png
.

I ordered some eggs through Ebay, won, and they went into the incubator today
big_smile.png
. There was a 20+ egg combo of SQ Wels, Legbars, SQ Lav Orps, SQ Lav AMS and SQ Sal Favs.

I can see that this huge incubator is going to be getting me into trouble

. I have started collecting my own Legbar, Wels, BA eggs for the last couple days and next week my BO run will be done and the following week eggs will start being collected on them. As soon as more runs are completed I'll have my EE's apart and my Dels. So excited!!!

Not only did I bid, and WIN, the aforementioned SQ eggs, but I also bid, and WON some peafowl eggs in assorted colors. Oh my!!!!!

Next week Legbars and Icelandics go into lockdown!! YAY!!
