Utah!

I started with 4 rescued chicks, built a coop that will easily house 6-8, so I said we can just get 4-5 hens, that will be good. Well right now with all the rescued babies, and a few that I did buy, of course I'm not keeping them all, I currently have 18 chicks at my house (Probably 10 Roos with my luck). I'm going to be building that other coop, so I think 10-12 will be a good number, but can I not count the bantams, they are so small, and the Silkies are so fluffy, they don't count as a chicken, they are just a fluff ball...Right??

Just remember you cant count chicks and roosters. Also if you have some that you are going to sale you cant count those right, because they belong to someone else. You just haven't found the owner yet. And just remember, if the city shows up and you have a rooster and your not supposed to, tell them he is just for stud service. It works with dogs.

... Well I'm sure 2 of the 4 Silkies are Roos, they are little monsters outside in the grow out pen. I can't believe they can literally fight all day long, and the more dominate one has his girls already, if the other one dares go near them, he has a fit. I know they are only 5 weeks old, but they are little buggers. So I guess if anyone wants a Silkie Roo, I'm sure I have 2. But they could just be little monster pullets too. Just sad cause they 2 that I think are Roos are the 2 that I really wanted to keep off their colors. Oh well, they are all so dang cute and getting so fluffy, I love it!

Or if a rooster just shows up you can tell the city you were roostered and are looking for a new home for them. Also remember you can't count anyone that isn't laying so if they are in a moult they don't count or broody they don't count or if they aren't pets they don't count. Chucky is still guarding the yard. Today he took on the local coopers hawk. Poor hawk didn't know what hit him.

So I have never introduced new chicks outside with the other chicks. Few questions. The oldest is my Bantam Cochin, she is 9 1/2 weeks old. Next is the 2 EEs, and 2 RIR that are 7 1/2 weeks old. I have the group of chicks that are 5-6 weeks old. They have been outside in the grow out pen with coop during the day for the last week, but tonight they seemed really mad at me for bring them inside tonight for bed, and they chatted for over an hour, trying to get out of the brooder. I have been throwing them outside about 7am, and its usually around 55-60 outside, and they seem fine with that temp. The older girls that are outside actually lay right next to the grow out pen fence, and even sit on top of the run with the other chicks. Usually they are all laying side by side just with a fence between them, all in their little chick piles on either side of the fence, during the day.

How long do I need to have them separated till I can just let them all be together, main reason is, since the babies seem much happier to stay outside, I want to put them in the large coop with the other 5 girls at night. The small grow out coop is great, and would work great as a night time coop, but I'm afraid that if they are not in the enclosed run with the apron, I could have a raccoon dig under the run fence since there is no apron around it and get into the coop, the run is made to be easily moved. I have had some small diggings in the morning around the fully enclosed run with apron the last few mornings. So I'm glad I have the apron. Since this has happened, I have now re-designed in my head, my shipping crate coop. Its now going to be raised up at least 3 feet with an enclosed area under the coop, with an apron around it for this reason, so everyone will be locked up tightly at night. And yes, I have been locking them in the coop at night, so there is no open doors to the coop.

I'm just worried that there is a size difference, except for my Bantam, they are all the same size as her. But they really are only 3 weeks apart. I can't believe how much they really grow in that amount of time.

Go Chucky! I may need to borrow Chucky if that Coopers shows up around here again!

Here are pictures of the cute NN's I got from this last hatch. Can't remember if I posted them already, but these are more recent from when they hatched.

I have a white older one, that is really looking like a boy. If any one is interested in the
possibility of a NN roo. :)
