Utah!

Neat. I just love those fuzzy butts. Sounds like you had your hands full with all.those black babies. Too bad about the guineas.

Would you post a pic of them? I haven't seen a chick.

She is just the cutest lil thing, my lil roo is a lil punk lol. I don't think I'll keep him. I'll try to get a good picture of him. To show off his wierdness. I got most of my chickens from IFA.
LOL... you aren't kidding

. Think my final count was about forty black chicks of three different breeds... only one is questionable. Might be a BA but also maybe a Black Orp, so it went in the Black Orp brooder bin, since I'll be keeping a closer eye on those. Three nights and days with virtually no sleep. I was up at 4AM today to catch up on cleaning the kitchen before it got hot inside the house, and then spent the day changing bands on older chicks, vaccinating, cleaning brooders and brooder bins, disinfecting, moving bigger chicks from the brooders to the younger juvenile coop and didn't finish doing chores and feeding horses until 11:10 PM tonight. Whew... hope I'm even making sense.

Tomorrow I'll get pics of the guinea keets. Took some pics today of the chicks but don't even remember where I put the camera... so very tired.

Ah, thank you.

Desert, sounds like you have a few chicks! Congrats on the hatch

LOL... yes, a few is an under statement.

Thanks!!

that's so awesome. Let me know how it all turns out
If I remember right I had 54 out of 69 hatch. Think that was after I found two more in the hatching tray tonight, maybe before... too tired to think straight. Was thinking about tossing the rest as no hatches, opened the inc and there were two babies looking at me. The eggs stay in!!! I'll give them 2 more days.

Gah, one of these days I am going to get a real life and not feel exhausted all the time. Actually, in another month or so, it looks like my work schedule might lighten up a bit and I'll actually have time to enjoy my kids, my chickens, and the stupid $4000 cat. Now, if I can just keep my mother out of the hospital...

Anyway, things are clipping along here. I still have the 3 adult Cream Legbar hens, but I am impossible to get hold of these days, so I don't know when I'll be able to get them sold. I also have 3 BLRW I was going to get rid of, but I was eyeing them yesterday as I got out of the car (yes, they are in the garage) and they are actually starting to look rather like breeding stock to me, so I'm not sure now! Of course, I believe I have mild dementia these days, so a clown would probably look like good breeding stock...

My chickens here at the house appear to be on strike--no one except Bokbok is laying any eggs. Can't figure it out, since the ones at the land are laying like crazy (my roommates keep bringing down buckets of eggs). Plenty of food, plenty of water, plenty of shade...and no eggs. Sheesh. I'm about to send the boys out to post a chicken salad recipe on the coops to see if that motivates them a bit.
So nice to see you on!!! Glad to hear you'll soon have some 'real' time.

Good news. Last week i was going to put down one of my Silkies cause she couldn't walk, after reading a couple post on her i decided to give her a chance to recover. Today she has been trying to stand on her bad leg. She has really been able to bend it but today she has been bending it for short periods of time and standing on it.
GREAT NEWS!!!!!

7 out of 9 leghorn eggs that went into lock down, hatched. :) These have the silver gene, so the when the chicks turn into hens, their babies can be sexed easily if they have been bred to a nice big red roo.
Very nice!!!!

You are lucky! I got 5 NN from McMurray this spring and they were all orange. Now I have three orange girls at POL and no blacks or whites, which I was really after. I got one buff at IFA to have something a little different, it was light yellow, and it turned out to be a boy. My dumb luck.

Speaking of which, sure enough it IS my oldest NN laying, I caught her today. Nice size tan eggs. She is laying pretty regularly too, thank goodness, the others are not at all. I did get more eggs today though, I think 13..better than the last couple days but still not great. But I fear all the thunder will make the next few days slow down again, they are all traumatized out there lol

Awesome hatch Cynthia! I cannot believe you are still hatching

Actually, ya I can haha

Casa~Didn't I get my Black NN from you? Sorry, you should have kept her, she is beautiful, and her tail is growing back in great. I posted an updated photo a few days ago, maybe you didn't see it.

Speaking of eggs, I'm sure none of my girls will start laying soon, my oldest chick is my Cochin Bantam mix hatched the middle of March, and then next is my 2 EE's and 1 RIR Apr. 3, the rest are May-June. Except I'm not sure when my NN was hatched, Casa when did you get her? Anyways, my neighbor with 28 chickens. lol told me to put small egg shaped rocks or golf balls in the nesting boxes so the girls know that's where to lay, and for them to get used to sitting up there. So do I need to do this, and when should I start doing it. I know my RIR will be the first to lay an egg, but I don't even know how old they are when they start laying. Everyone says different. She's almost 14 weeks old. So my guess is around 22-28 weeks right?

So, my pro broody hen has been out and about with her adopted chicks today. She is such a good momma. I took up over ripe peaches and plums. Momma hen grabbed half of one and started pulling it apart. She would then cluck for a baby to come over and she would give it to them. It was just cute. She is as happy as can be purring and clucking over those little ones.

Yes you did get her from me, she came from another breeder... and would have been great but remember I had to sell her because the flock just would not accept her, kept picking in her. Dang it! But I am glad you have her, she is so pretty :) I love the accents of brown on her feathers :love

My NN Alice that started laying....I cracked open her egg this morning and it is FERTILE :D Yay! So my showgirl rooster Vinnie, is successfully mating with her...they both have NN so I wonder if babies would be black skinned or not, silkied feather or not, LF or not.....I really might try to hatch some of these, because the curiosity is killing me lol I don't know if I can resist!

What cracks me up, she is by far the biggest bird out there, and little ole banty Vinnie took her on succesffully. What a studmuffin lol. I have seen him showing off for her, maybe it is that bare neck that attracted him. Silly boy :)

Quick question for anyone that has any info. We have a decent amount of extra eggs and give them to family/neighbors but go through egg cartons pretty fast. I have looked online and see the one dozen cartons going for around .40-.80 each. Does anyone have an idea one where we can buy cartons for less?

Other than asking people you know to drop extras by (which I would bet you already do), I don't know of a cheap source.Wish I was more help. Telling people somewhere they can safely leave the cartons if you aren't home may get you a few more dropped by than otherwise.
That is very nice of you to share the eggs!

I saw some permanent cartons at Cal Ranch yesterday. Didnt have the price but you might be interested in those. :D

I will for sure. I just need to take some good pictures of them. My Dominique is looking adorable! Same with my 3 NN's, all 3 look considerably different.

I have a Dominique too. :weee Mine is about 3 months old. They are nice birds. Mine is really friendly and meets me at the run's door although I'm sure she just wants first go at treats.

I have my egg people trade out cartons and flats when they get their eggs. If they don't have a trade out I charge an extra dollar as deposit. Some people will just expect you to supply them... that's just selfish on their part.

They need to do their part and at least supply you with cartons.... that is the courteous thing to do!!

Have you asked for them back?? I do... those people who keep them go off my egg list!! OR get charged, like I said.
