Gary--Quail have been really easy--they just need a cage, not so much a run. I will find a pic of my setup, we used a wood frame with chicken wire on it, hardware cloth on the bottom, a droppings tray underneath...hinged lid on top....it is open so that is their "run" to be outside..then made some enclosures on the end for little "coops" that have hinged lids to open. I put the feeder in the enclosed part because then the food does not fall through the wire, they like to dig in it....rabbit bottles for water...the boys can fight so we have a divider in the middle, a boy on each side with two hens on each side, but I am adding two more girls to each side because the boys are very "active" hehe...the girls are going bald on their heads from getting hi-jacked

Here is the cage--I will go get better pics when it is light outside...it is about three feet wide plus the wood boxes, so about 5 feet total maybe? and less than 2 feet deep. We put legs on it...the board on the front down at the bottomis irrelevant, it i just sitting up against the legs to give the chickens shade. I moved the quail cage out of the run this weekend, It worked fine in there but my girls need all the room they can get, so we put the quail under an awning by some lilac bushes for now. I think you would really like them ! They are so fun, we really have liked them much more than we thought we would. And the chicks and eggs seem to sell well. I would be glad to give you some chicks or eggs, just let me know!

inside the end enclosure..

Will get some more pics if you like.
I guess i have a new project for this weekend. I seen a 4' x 10' x 1/2" pc of plywood in the pallet stack at work. Do they have a roost in the pen or do they sleep in a pile. yes i would like some birds, Let me build the coop/run first. Do they go broody? Remember...I'm not allowed to have an (electric) incubator. All though it has come to attention that i am feeding hens that seem to only want to hatch eggs and not lay them. Today i heard, "They are a waste if they don't lay". My answer..."We sale the chicks to pay for feed". You can never go wrong with this answer as long as its true.

Trying to catch up on everything that happened while I was in Zion National Park. We had a wonderful time. It was kind of weird because there was thunderstorms most of the time we were there. That was bad because we didn't get to hike the narrows like the kids wanted, but we got to see some REALLY cool flash floods in action. It also was nowhere near the 100+ temps we are used to. Overall, everyone was very sad the vacation ended, and we all kind of wanted us to give up our regular lives and just live there.

Sara, it's good to "see" you. LOVE your hair. Very fun! I wish I had the courage to do fun colors.

Rlh1, congrats on your first egg! So cute!

Delarooshens, we should meet for lunch sometime when you're in Ogden. I'd love to visit with you in person.

Ace, that knitted chicken is so adorable!

MadChicken, 9/12 isn't bad. They are sooooooo cute!!!! I wish I wasn't so tired, or I'd try to figure out who the gray ones belong to. The black ones are obviously fathered by my FBCM.

Desert, so scary with the coyotes!

Red, I candled your eggs this evening. One was clear and never started. I think one is a 6-7 day quitter. The rest are all going strong, though there's a couple of wonky air cells. I've had them hatch just fine with weird air cells though. I can't WAIT to see what pops out. It's so fun to incubate when you don't have to worry about finding homes for the babies!! Woot!

Brian, so glad you got a new place. I'm excited for you to have a new beginning.

No roost bars in mine. Don't know if others have tried that though. Mine sleep out in the open, they don't even go to the enclosed part. Let me get some pics tomorrow of a couple more things we did this weekend to help make it easier to clean. I will get some better closeups. No rush, I have two people waiting for chicks and I probably don't have enough in the bator yet to cover their orders. I am setting about 18 per week, one lays doubles so I am not setting those...they take 18 days to hatch, to it will likely be 3-4 weeks until I have newly hatched chicks I can get to you :) I am factoring in some loss, if they hatch really good then it might be sooner. When I hatched the original eggs I got 17/24. If you want them sexed, I could tell when they are about 3 weeks old. Will definitely get some more eggs in the bator for you :) I saw a video online of broody quail, but don't know how often it happens. I thought I read somewhere they don't often brood if you keep collecting the eggs daily. They are laying machines. I have 4 hens and got 26 eggs last week. 24-26 is about the norm so far. If only I could get my chickens to catch on! I have just started these and still learning...if you need more expert info pawtraitart has quail...also icyoldhen in Idaho, she is the one I got them from (and she got her stock from pawtraitart I believe?) and sundancen has had them also. Cynthia, lucky you! That baby is so cute! I got a cute picture text tonight of her and the three boys, they look over the moon! So happy she has gotten through the L&D. Now, she is going to have her hands FULL lol!

Oh, Ace - I forgot to say how cute your chicken plush is! Did you knit it? I had a dear friend in high school that was stellar at knitting. Haven't seen him in years, though.

Brain, judging by the picture, i would build the coop under the apple tree on the left. I have an apple tree that leans way down also and it is one of the favorite places for the gang to hang out.  They love to dig in the dirt for bugs and worms. Just look for the roots of the tree and fence that area off, they will dig it up. Apple trees do not grow deep! I have braces holding my leaning apple tree up.
that's where I was thinking of putting the coop over there by the apple tree. Its the shortest apple tree I've ever seen lol. I love that the yard is perfectly flat. Thursday is the big moving day after work... ugh.. I hate moving lol... is it over yet?
