My lucky chickens had a big treat today. I went to the farmers market in downtown SLC pioneer park. It is huge. My friend too me and I rode my 3 wheel cart as its so big there is no way I could walk around it. we were there 2 hours and only saw half of it. As we were leavinv there was a produce truck packing up. I saw three cantaopes with soft spots in them on the ground. I asked them if they were throwing them away and if so could I have them for my chickens. They gave those to me and asked if I could take some peaches and tomatoes. They filled up 3 big plastic bags with produce. My friend came up with her car and parked it close so I didn't have to ride my scooter very far, When they saw where we were parked the brought 3 more sacks that had green beans berries more melons etc. They told me to come by at closing any saturday and they would be happy to give me produce for the chickens. My friend was laughing at me when they were loading up her car. She says the eggs are going to taste like melon, peaches and corn. When I took them out to the chickens they went nuts. They loved it. It started raining and they stood out in the rain eating the fruits. It was so fun th watch them

Oh, Sundance, that sounds like such a great treat for your hens! Mine love fresh produce, so I'm a little jealous. I also recently learned cows like it too, so now I'm really on the lookout for the people rejects.

There's a place in the Clearfield area that gives away pallets as well. Those pallet hen houses intrigue me.

I don't recall if I posted the link here or not, but if you do use pallets, use a sawzall to separate them. I'll have to see if I can find the link.

I had thought about building with pallets, but the time to disassemble them convinced me not to. If I had found that link sooner!

That's really cool that those people gave you so much, and that you had a good use for it, as well! I have taken home vegetable and fruit scraps from work before for my girls.

I got a surprise this morning. The neighbor behind us has a rooster! He has a nice, deep-throated crow, and my mom and I like him, but I'm a little worried now that someone may think he's mine and call AC on us. I hope not! He keeps coming over to the part of the fence nearest to our yard, probably because he can hear my hens. I'm tempted to throw a hen over the fence to keep the poor guy company, but he's quite scruffy and I don't want one of my girls to get sick if he has something. Plus, the neighbors may not appreciate that........

Does that wing stay dropped like that? That is pretty neat if it does. I would say a mix also..but that's because I don't know what he is. lol....

I think the chicken train has been working its magic today....hope everybody on my list gets their birds/eggs ok.

Gary, let me know if you have any questions..just don't feed them medicated chicks starter, game bird starter or turkey starter or grower works In a pinch for overnight reg chicken feed would be ok without medicine in it. Sorry for the last minute drop off it just all came together all of a sudden and we found a willing participant that is not on BYC to haul the goods south! I did not have your ph # so I am glad Silly got ahold of you They were born 8/3 so should start laying in 2 1/2 weeks or so, and will get lots bigger.

Thanks for the quail Lisa! I had to make a quick temp home for them. (an old bird bird cage we have been saving for a new parrot) I have 2 1/2 sheets of 3/4" plywood i have saved from work. I should be able to make something for them this weekend.

Thanks Lisa for my Hokey Pokey, I just love her, and she's not much bigger then my 2 1/2 week old Bantams, so maybe she will be on the smaller side. I just can't get over how unique she looks.
