Thanks for the heads up, Speckled!
Eryka, welcome! I'm sure you will get some chicks and/or adult birds from someone on here. Depending on the season, we have them come out of our ears!
Well I had a scare yesterday morning. I got up to feed the flock, and my mom said that she was worried a dog had gotten into the yard, because she heard a man and a child run through the north part of our yard while shouting. So I went out and did a head count. Everyone was present - except for my turkey hen, Betty. I could see both her poults, who were unusually quiet. I fed the flock and wandered around the yard calling for Betty. Found two tail feathers from one of her poults and thought, "Oh, no. Did she try to take on that dog?" Got around back again right as all of my chickens screamed and ran under the bushes. That's when I saw a huge bird flying down into the preserve ....................... and realized it was Betty! She was either up on our shed roof, or in the neighbor's tree, probably at least ten feet off the ground. I was so relieved to see that she was okay. She really has become a favorite for me.
The neighbor came over not long after and said we might want to check on our turkeys. He said that they were over in his yard, and his doggy (who's a very good girl, but a bird dog, nonetheless) was on a leash and couldn't take it. She snapped the leash and took off after the birds. I think she may have taken a bite at one of the poults, and then Betty went after her and got herself chased up somewhere high. Despite the grim situation, we did have to laugh. Poor dog. "I can't take it anymore! AROOOO!!"
So, I'll be taking some eggs over as a peace offering, since my turkeys were out of bounds. And, I'm very glad that Betty is such a flyer.
