They seem to be close to full size when they start laying, they grow just slightly after that but not a lot. I have not weighed mine yet, I would like to though just to see. I have two hens that lay bigger eggs compared to the others, but they started first so maybe the others will catch up! And the shorter days kind of messed up their laying. Boy from June to end of September though they laid every single day without fail, now that I have the lights on them they are laying but not like they were, out of 5 hens I am getting 3-4 eggs a day, 3 most days. Don't you love their little faces? Their eyes when they look at you, looks like a lot is going on in their little heads

ETA: Oh! If you are asking how big the eggs get, not the hens...the eggs are a little bigger than a quarter most of the time now.

where do you live I am going to hatch some out in the spring but I didn't know where to get eggs. And what kind are they

I had my 2 youngest nieces with me since Thursday and have had the best time. It was so cute watching how excited they got looking for eggs lol.

They are so cute. I get blue, green, and a few different colored eggs and they said that the eastet bunny lives in my chicken coops lol. Cutest thing ever.

I have a neighbor that gets excited whenever I take him some eggs and I have blue ones in there.

aren't kids the cutest, I had a n ice day watching Ed install another automatic door on Cluckingham Palace today, Now I have one front and back, If the hawk is around I can let them out into the back covered run. Otherwise they cam come and go out the new front door that opens automatically, It was really funny watching Ed and his friend install the door with the peanut gallery watching and inspecting. What was really funny was after it was installed. I went inside and called them to me throwing a few meal worms on the floor. they all tried to come through the opening at once and got stuck. It was really funny. then they figured out they needed to come in one at a time. Now they are going in and out like its a new game. Sphinx came over yesterday and brought my two chickens she has been raising. She brought my legbar hen and a really pretty blue Americana, Her feathers are laced with black she is beautiful. Her kids are so cute they had a good time loving the dogs. It was so pretty today and I felt so bad. I could not let the seramas out from the covered pen as I don't want the hawk to see them. Darn it they had to spend the last few nice days of the year locked up. Better safe than sorry

where do you live I am going to hatch some out in the spring but I didn't know where to get eggs. And what kind are they

I live in Logan, I come to your area frequently enough I could bring you eggs---the ones I have now are jumbo coturnix brown, I got mine from IcyOldHen, who got some of her stock from pawtraitart I think, they are both in Idaho but I have family up there, so I go that direction too....IcyOldHen got some Texas A&M quail a little while ago and some new stock coturnix that were supposed to be really jumbo size, I would like to get more eggs from in the Spring from her and hatch, if she still has them available Anyway they are around just holler when you want some I am sure we can find some no problem. I think pawtraitart has bobwhite quail too

ARGH! My neighbor has offered me some gorgeous polish (golden laced, white topped black, white topped blue, and a buff silkie) in exchange for some fbcm hatching eggs when they start laying again. I love polish, but they're terrible layers. I may do it anyway.

Just popping in to say hi! We're getting lots of pullet eggs here lately. Cute little things. Not the colors I hoped for though. So that means I'll be looking for more colors in the spring.

Gardening question. I've been trying to figure out how to winterize my garden. Some sites say leave it till spring so the harsh weather doesn't strip the ground. Others say dig it up, till it under and fertilize. What is best here?

In other news. I'm lovin my steady job. I feel useful now.

I usually end up leaving my garden until Spring and then tilling it under, but I have family members that prefer to till in the Fall so that the nutrients have more time to disperse in the soil (I think)

Sara, it depends on the fertilizer. some manure is to hot to put on the garden in the spring. I till mine under in the fall. I till all my leaves and grass clippings in to ground, as well as the straw and chicken poop i clean out of the coops during the summer. If you till it under before winter it will be much easier to work with in the spring. When spring comes and i till the ground there is no sign of any of the plant material that i tilled in at all. I have always tilled the garden in the fall. Also if you have stuff still in the ground like carrots, beets, radishes, onions, etc. you can just pile straw on top of them and the ground will not freeze under the straw. Nothing beats fresh veggies out of the garden during December.
