The cream legbars are still a newer breed. GFF is selling them for 59.00 a chick and then you still have to ship them. Shipped eggs are a gamble as well. I would pay $35 for an autosexing chick that is still selling for $59+. Just my two cents as this was a breed that I was really interested in last year.

Yeah but its chase hatchery on KSL and they have been having lots of sick and dying chicks

This is for all new chicken parents that are unsure of how cold is to cold. I put chicks outside with heat when they are 3-4 weeks. i have 2 chicks that are 6 weeks old now that are kind of on their own. no heat for the last 3 days. during the day if the sun is out they are all over the yard but if it dark and rainy they hang out under the coop with a crippled hen i have (AKA Little Red or just Lilred). I feel kind of bad for them but so far they have been OK. They have been sleeping under the wings of Lilred at night to keep warm. Since the hen is crippled and blind in 1 eye they don't have too hard of a time keeping under her wing. She doesn't like them under her and will give them a good peck if she can see them but that don't stop them. She will eventually just give in and let them snuggle next to her, i pretty sure it keeps her warm also. All three sleep under the coop which is protected from the wind on the north side and buckets of wheat on the west side. There is also a bale of straw under the coop they snuggle up to and about 3" of straw on the ground they sleep on. And i have also found that the more you subject chicks to the cold that they will grow there feathers in faster. I have noticed that chicks raised in the cold will be full feathered in 4 weeks. keep in mind these chicks were hatched outside under a hen on 3-24-2014 and they all made it.

This is some young birds i have out side now that are 10-12 weeks old and love being outside since they were 4-weeks old. Oh and buy they way im am selling 4 of these RIR's and 1 Welsummer pullet the Welly roo.

Here is 1 of the little ones hideing behind Lilred. And yes i know its a little rooster!

They are so cute! I totally agree with you. The first ones I had I totally babied and they took forever to feather out. Since then I leave them with the heat lamp till 2 weeks old, and then switched them over to the 70 watt. And if its warm enough outside they go out for the day with protection if they want, and bring them in by night. Usually by 5 weeks I can cut their light in the house at night. and usually by 7-8 weeks old I keep them outside with in the grow out coop. They feather much faster.

So after my last post i found a soft spot in my heart and went out and rescued the 2 small chicks. I climbed under the coop and grabbed them and put them in the big coop in a nest box. For those of you who know me you better stop laughing at the thought of me crawling on my belly to get these chicks or your going to get roostered! The lowest the temp will drop in the big coop tonight will be in the low 50's.

Great info, im sure thats the reason then why my babies arent feathering faster then is im babying them. Im such a worry wart when it comes to them being too cold. I keep worrying about the time they have to go outside for good. I dont want to loose any of them. I bet if I reduced their heat or even just took it away since they are still in the house then they'd fill out much faster. This might sound dumb but is a 70 watt bulb just an ordinary bulb in your house? I've never observed what those were, so thought i'd ask. If not, can I just find one at walmart?

Gary, you little softy. I know everyone would get a chuckle out of watching me catch chicks..in the day!! It's the trying to get up that is funny looking to others, but oh so hard for me.

But I'm getting things changed around out there for the older pullets. They are in a different run tonight. They got to free range for the first time today. They loved it of course, then they get worried when it starts getting dark. I also am a softie knowing how cold it is out there. I still need to go out and put a warmer light in the nursery. I put those babies in that I just hatched a couple of days ago. I only have a 100 W. in there, but, I have a tarp clamped down pretty good. There is one little pullet in with them that is around two weeks old, they are probably all snuggled up just fine, I probably won't need to put in a more heat..will see.

I'm considering trading my "Possible roos" for pullets if anyone is interested. I keep hoping they arent but I just sense they are. Their combs are starting to raise up, and widen while the others still look small and girly. It makes me really sad because one is my only splash (one of my fav) and the other is white. Both are super fluffy, nice quality bearded silkies. Tons of fluff on head, cheeks, and feet. I dont want to just give them up without replacement though cause I think that would just make it harder but thought if someone was looking for some good quality bearded silkie roos for breeding and had any young bearded pullets they'd be interested in trading for them, let me know. Im pretty much open for all colors but really want a splash back. I also would love a partridge, paint, or black. If there's any interest let me know. These pics were taken last week.

My 4 babies are still way too tiny to even venture a guess. If I did trade I'd very possibly be giving you another roo! :). But I'm tempted! That little splash's face is so sweet! According to city zoning I'm allowed 8 hens. If you're thinking roo I'd better not chance it. Good luck! I do need...no really...need ;) 4 more beautiful, fluffy, crested, poofy faced little balls of happiness! If anyone has any extra or knows where I could get beautiful, fluffy, crested, poofy faced little balls of happiness please let me know! Thanks!
