Utah!

Thanks Sundance. I already have a dozen set aside :) Be safe!
I feel for you Cynthia.... I get that way with horses.... and right now, I've got it BAD! :love :drool my poor poor husband has to deal with me going on about how badly I want a horse... It's funny, because I found an AWESOME looking mule, and I want it LOL! it has zebra stripes on its' legs! But honestly, the type of horse I want, is a Mustang. Everyone I know keeps trying to deter me.... but I want one, just because homeless animals have a special place in my heart :hit
That really is a striking mule. And I'm right there with you on the 'stangs! I love mustangs, especially if they're buckskin or a similar coloration. There's something about their smaller build and wild spirit that I can't help but love. I am very much a greenhorn with handling horses, though, so when we are able to get one for me, it will probably be the oldest, slowest, most mellow horse we can find.

nah, there are some amazing just trained ones. It really just depends on how well they're trained!

I want that mule so badly! hah, but alas, I would have to train it to do groundwork unless I hired a trainer, and I have never done any training myself

My husband would tell me that I should get one that I can ride now... and honestly, ifI had to choose between that mule, and a mustang, I'd probably still go for the stang. I just thought it would be cool to get looks for those zebra legs ;)

Sundance,

The pioneer bit did it for me, that was just the input I needed to get a grasp on this egg thing. I should have known it, and perhaps I did, but it did not come up in the data bank… so anyway thank you for putting it into a perspective I do understand.

Come spring, and if I were to collect eggs for hatching how long can you collect a batch for? Is it ten days or perhaps longer… and these eggs just sit on the counter top in the kitchen or where. I am thinking along the lines of hatching some Banty chicks next year, or so.

The little guys are about seven weeks old now and I am letting them hop out of the coop to explore some. I love how they can jump and how they are such feisty little things. I'll be having a few extra roos from this batch if anyone is looking for a Banty rooster or two. I will have OEGB, BBReds, Gingers, Silver Duckwing & some Golden Sebrights I believe. No rush as of yet, just something to keep in mind if you are affected by the OEGB bug like I am.

Thanks everyone, best to your birds,

RJ

Congratulations Cynthia!

RJ--Back in the day they used to rub mineral oil on the eggs and they would last, a long long time....during the depression they did this to prolong the egg shelf life. Basically when it is laid the chicken coats it with "the bloom" and so long as the bloom is in tact (unwashed) it should last up to two weeks just fine on the counter. The mineral oil seals the bloom even further making it fairly bulletproof. However, once they are washed, the bloom is then disrupted and bacteria can then enter through the shell, albeit quite slowly....so still ok on the counter for a short time but best to refrigerate if you can. Now, two things about them staying in the coop...if you have roosters, and that egg is fertile and the temps are warm in the coop it can start to develop into an embryo within 24 hrs, so you don't want it to sit there too long or it will get a blood spot. And like Cynthia said, in the winter they pop and freeze. Another concern about them staying in the coop is the chickens can break them accidentally, and once they taste that egg, you can develop egg eaters that will break and eat the eggs constantly. It can be a problem because the whole flock can start doing it and there goes your eggs. It is REALLY hard to break them of that. Anyway, hope that helps you in deciding how often and when to collect, store etc :D

Cynthia--that is amazing, I am soooo happy for you! So 12 kids, and how many grandkids now? thirty something? and 1 great grandbaby? You have been so very blessed, such an wonderul family you have!

Oh RJ---also, I just saw the post about collecting fertile eggs---yes you collect them and keep them at room temperature, pointy side down in a carton. Never wash them, scrape of any debris carefully if you have to, trying not to disrupt the bloom. Away from sunlight or heat...tip the carton slightly to one side (put a book under one end) then alternate the tipped end each day until you incubate them. This keeps the air cell intact in the right place. 7 days is a typical length the egg stays viable, I have had them hatch up to ten days old, after that they really start to be duds. That being said, I did have some that got washed and put in the fridge, and a week later I incubated them and got 2 out of ten to still hatch, but the above method is pretty much the general consensus that I have seen on here :D

Hi guys post fron San Diego.   Its been a nice get away and I love reading everyones posts.
RJ  Eggs can go a very long time without being refrigerated.  Thats why the pioneers kept hens in cages as it was a nutritional food that kept easily.  You could leave the eggs in the coop for a week and they would be fine.  When I was so sick last year.  I would leave the eggs for 3 or 4 days before collecting some days and they were fine.
Red I'll be home Sunday or Monday so start collecting your eggs again.
I am going to be stopping at Oc seramas to pick up a show rooster for Caroline and a roo for Liz.  If anyone else wants any show birds let me know  phone 801 597 7854
We were going to go to disneyland but its so hot here at the moment we decided to leave and go to vegas,  Its hot there but most attractions are inside airconditioned,.

Awww that omelette is looking YUM! Kudos to the Mrs, RJ!

Ok, I have to hijack our thread for just a quick minute, mostly for Cynthia...these are some pics of babies for her, and lots of showgirls to boot! She and I share a fondness for these crazy little critters. I hope you enjoy the fluff!

Showgirls, and some big beards!

Oh my goodness! I can't stand it! Too much cute! Now that everyone is happy and healthy, I am kicking myself!!!

Just wanted to share my new cute lil girl. I finally found a paint :) I got her from crazy sandy. She just turned 8 weeks old. I'm pretty sure she's a pullet, since the comb looks very small and narrow. I'm so excited about finally finding one :)
