Hey everyone,

I'm new to BYC, and apologize if this has been discussed in the recent past...
I'm getting new chicks this week, and am debating between IFA and CalRanch - any suggestions? I'm open to other options as well, I just want to make sure my chicks are healthy and they come from a place that treats them well!!

My needs are pretty simple...two barred Plymouth rocks and two buff orpingtons. I called the Cal Ranch in West Jordan today, and whoever answered the phone told me she didn't know what hatchery their chicks come from. When I called The IFA in Riverton, she said half of theirs come from privett in New Mexico, and the other half comes from Dunlap in Caldwell Idaho. I think I would prefer the Idaho hatchery, but there isn't really any way to guarantee that I could get a chicken from Idaho, unless I was there when they opened the box.

I also called them, I am down here in Spanish Fork. They said..either this weekend or the next. Plus, I was told that TSC was going to have them in last Sat. Didn't happen, still not there, but they have my number.

If you check the Dunlap Hatchery, in Caldwell Idaho's web site and they have the breed you wish, you can get with the nice person whom places the chick orders at IFA and ask them to order them in for you, with their next order from Dunlap. This way you can get the Idaho birds you wish and they will be held out for you. I have gotten chicks from Dunlap, via this method, and was more that pleased with the quality. So, perhaps this is another avenue to look into… I know the feeling of wanting what you want, and not being able to find them. This might work out for you. It is still early enough in the season that there should be time for the stars to aline and allow you to get your birds.

If you are in Northern Utah you may want to check out Dalas Green. I believe they only order from Dunlap.
Also I'm not sure the day but the Clearfield store is having a "raising baby chicks" seminar this? week.

Yes, @Red, Cynthia is veeeery busy on the Easter thread! Come join in the fun! I can't believe how fast it's moving, and we will have three weeks! The fun part is knowing I'll always see that little red dot when I login. Haha.
Today I picked up a drop spindle. Does anyone know where I can get some raw fiber to spin?

Well… I do not know how to say this, but I seem to have a new girl friend. Her name is Henny Penny and she seems to like me best. Most times when I go out to the coop to check on the birds, prior to letting them out for the day, she will jump up on my lap and we are able to share a few minutes together. I don't know if chickens can purr, but somehow she seems to vibrate her gentle persona into my hands and chest. Of all the birds I am privileged to mingle with on a daily basis, Henny Penny is my best girl, and I suppose I do spoil her some. On Wednesdays I take her in for a weekly pedicure. Should you look at the feet of said bird, shown below, you will see she has selected a lovely shade of pink, to complement her comb and waddles. I am still searching for a bag online to match this outfit, but have not, at this point, found one that she favors.



Henny Penny is a BBR Banty hen and her best friend is Silver Penney, a nice Silver Duckwing hen of the same age. Beautiful creatures, these little hens. Looking forward to adding some new OEG birds a little bit down the road this spring. I do so hope the nice folks here in the Utah thread enjoy their birds as much as do I.

i have known a few people that did that and they raised angora rabbits and with the haircuts and such used that fiber. on a side note chickens are great at cleaning up after rabbits

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! I hadn't thought much outside IFA & CalRanch as far as stores go, and I'm not opposed to driving North (I'm in South Jordan), so I may give Dallas Green a call. I had also thought about finding someone who wants a larger quantity of BO's and BPR's and just piggybacking on an order, but I don't know if I'm that patient I have my heart set on picking some up this weekend, so I will do some calling around throughout the week.

Are raccoons going to be an issue for me? I live in eastern Springville by the canyon. I have never heard of them being around in the neighborhoods.

you live in prime habitat for raccoons actually. they are there but being how they are mostly out at night when most people sleep its easy to miss them. there are of course other predators out there too
