Utah!

So, first off, we found out what we are having, and it's a girl :) (we currently have 3 boys, so having a girl is great for us haha).

Secondly, I have a broody silkie. I was wondering if anyone in Utah county, wanted to donate, or trade some fertile eggs for non fertile ones? if we could meet up around orem to about spanish fork (may even be willing to go a little bit further each way). I've never put eggs under a hen before.... do I need to separate her at all? Or do i just need to mark the eggs so that they don't get mixed up with the ones she's hatching vs the chickens that want to lay in the same box (I have 3 boxes! they only use like 1 or 2 of them!). Also, I doubt I'll be able to keep the chicks, (since I can only have 6 chickens here)... so I may end up having to find them a home, or rehome some of my yr old hens... we will see how attached I am to all of them ;) lol

Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

Leslie

oh, here's my favorite ultrasound pic that we got when we found out

Congrats on your "pullet"! So happy for you! :ya

It's a girl!!! You must be soo excited. That little foot is adorable..what a great shot..I mean, whatever they call it...lol...do you have a girl name picked out?

Cutest foot ever! Congratulations!

Ive only ever used a broody once, so take from this what you will. I separated my hen, by putting her in a dog kennel. I did it at night so she would be less alarmed by the move. I was just worried about the eggs getting cracked by the excess weight of other hens sitting on her to lay their eggs in her nest while she was setting, you know? All my hens lay in the same box (more or less), and it was the one she chose to brood in. Silly chickens. (Or smart if you think of the instinct they have to have their eggs sat on.) Any who, I have read from several people who left their broody in their box, and some have great results that route. This was the route I chose, and we had four little hatchlings in the end. Good luck!

Congratulations, bitsy! That is a beautiful little foot! :)

Okay, my first batch ever in the new incubator is officially set! 19 Icelandic eggs. Here's hoping!

OMG, I want a Sizzle... I'm coming to raid your house! I will even bring you a box of Samoas to do it. So my sister wants me to hatch. She really wants a Maran so if anyone has any they are selling around April 4-6th when I will be leaving to add to the ones I hatch that would be great, with my luck I would take her all Roosters. But so now the question is how many eggs do I want to put in the incubator. I'm thinking if I can get about 20 or so and at least 10 hatch that way they will have enough in there to huddle to stay warm on the drive to NM. And then what she doesn't keep I will bring home.

Guess I should go plug in the incubator. lol And start my egg hunt, I would like to set them by Friday. So that way they are at least a day or 2 old before we drive out. Thoughts on that.

I will be bringing some Gold cuckoo Marans chicks home in April, Their parents are beautiful and hatched out of pretty chocolate colored eggs. For you breeders these will not bre related to any one in Utah. They come from a show home here in Arizona
